Do any of you use tripe regularly to feed your dogs and if so which type and where do you get it from.
I use it but have trouble getting the best stuff, what types are available and which types must never be fed.

All my dogs were given some butchers tripe to take home with their puppy pack, but this smelt revolting, I then tried some from Pets at home, but it seemed a bit fine and grey, then I tried some from a private pet store which was good but a bit awkward to get hold of when needed.
Is it best to go direct to the Abbatoir or go to one of those vans that deliver.

All help appreciated.

Give Albion meats a ring, they deliver. Tripe is (24p/lb I think) Tel:0121 5255997.
We buy all of our dogs meat from them and they are very good. They also sell Chicken, Beef, trotters, ears etc

Hi,
all my dogs eat tripe, I get it from Greaves butchers (advertised in the back of dog world). Its proper cows tripe, don't use sheeps as it causes problems and goes straight through them.
I leave it overnight to defrost in a sealed plastic container (otherwise it smells the place out!) and feed it raw the following day. I feed it with a mixer.
All my dogs are healthy, rarely have tummy problems, have excellent coats and I wouldn't change to anything else.

I also buy Ox hearts from the same butcher and they are good too.

I get beef tripes direct from the abbatoir where they cost me £3 each - depending on size probably between 20 - 30 lbs each. I cut them up into 1lb (ish) pieces and freeze them in bags of a couple of meals each.

I have fed sheeps tripes (paunches) in the past and don't remember any problems (got a large bucket as a Christmas present !!!. ) Have ordered some of these from the abbatoir next week as could not get them until then.

Hi there, I have fed my hounds tripe for the last twenty years and wouldnt feed anything else. They are well covered, have good healthy coats and never get upset tummies or skin problems. Just a word of warning, you may find you need to worm your dog a little more often. If you do buy direct from an abbatoir, make sure you ask for the BEST tripe, there is something called Bible tripe ( it is like a lot of flat grey thin pages) and it is horrible, stciky grey and mushy, yuck!!! If you find a good pet shop, and tell them it is going to be a regular order, they should be able to get it for you evry week.

I get green tripe from my local butcher, he kills all the animals himself. It has been good for my dogs, they love it. Dont' know if anyone has mentioned it, but green tripe raw is very good for dogs, it is bleached white for human consumption.

First time one of my Boxers was faced with a piece of green tripe he sat in a corner and shook, can't say I blamed him it was a bit of a shock to me too

Does it smell much raw cos if not I shall have a go? My dad used to eat tripe and onions cooked in milk when I was a kid and the smell of it cooking made me physically sick. Used to be warned to stay out of the way :D

Albion deliver to a friend of mine in west wales after they leave us (near Cardiff), so I can't imagine it would be a problem. They deliver to us on Mondays. Give them a ring :-)
By nouggatti [ie] Date 30.08.02 12:41 GMT
The smell of it raw is ok, the smell of it cooking would make an iron stomach ill

Phil, I think the closest I came to a divorce was when 200lbs of green tripe and 150lbs of fresh ox-hearts were found thawling in thr bath!
By philippa [gb] Date 30.08.02 16:53 GMT
Hi sis, roflol, I dont even think Steve would tolerate that :D :D
By mari [ie] Date 30.08.02 17:07 GMT
I know Sharon I get an awful lot of stick beause of sliced ox tails , they smell real bad when thawed.
I keep saying to myself when filling dishes with tripe oxtail trotters etc and pureed veg and fruit .
It is aalll worth it, it is all worth it . The dogs are getting the right type of food . Sometimes I feel like throwing them into a forest and saying come out when your full . or opening a bag of pedigree chum advanced and measuring out the amount and walking away .
The advantages are 1st white poo , no mess . [Im looking at what im writing and saying to me are you gone mad ] muscular dogs . laid back dogs
. I especially like it when I see them in the garden with a meaty bone intent on it and happy as the day is long with the enjoyment of it .
Berry did not like it at first but now wont have it any other way
I feel her little muscular body did a lot for her winning the three B.O.B on the circuit at 7 mths .
You only get out what you put in . No point in getting one of the best bred sharpeis in england if your not prepared to put some work in to see they stay the best .
Just my thoughts for the day . Says she as she realises walking away im 51 since yesterday or 45 plus. eekand I know so I do LOL :D :D Mari

Mari, do you rememeber when you could get whole sheep's heads? Now that WAS a visit to Marriage Council!!
By philippa [gb] Date 30.08.02 17:16 GMT
Hi sis, Emma still gives her dogs whole sheeps head sometimes ! Its the eyes I would find difficult to cope with!!
By Christine (*****) Date 30.08.02 18:41 GMT
Hi all, I`m looking for tripe & sheeps head but can`t find them any where you lucky lot! Smell doesn`t bother me, I lost it in an accident 14yrs ago & from what you lot say its a good job :-) Mine have oxtails 1-2 wk but I only have them cut in about 3. When I started this a few mths ago I had given my lot them & they had only been cut (& I`d given too much) in half & my feller came home took a look at the lawn & said "bloody hell it looks like the Serengetti here"! :-) And Mari how true, it makes it all worth while when you see them so muscular & contented.

Hi everyone,
Sometimes I give my boxer nellie tripe mixed with her james wellbeloved because she wont eat it on its own. but she wont eat it raw so I cooked it but ive just read a post that said dont cook and im worried now. why cant you cook it and am I getting the right kind of tripe its white and comes in slices and i just stick some in a pan and boil it. would it benefit her going on tripe full time instead of being mixed with james wellbeloved.
P.s I also have to boil chicken peices every morning and scrape the meat off to mix in with her JW because she just refuses to eat it on its own, tried the barf diet but a vet nurse at training told me she had recently treated a dog with salmonella that was very poorly which scared me off. Theres just so many opinions on food and I just want to find one thats safe, she likes and will benefit her. any ideas?
By Brainless (Moderator) [gb] Date 30.08.02 19:42 GMT
It sounds like you are giving her the type of tripe that has been prepared for human consumption. Green trip is that way, as it still has some of the remains of what the cow ate, and this part digested green matter is part of the benefit of feeding tripe. Like most things cooking destroys some of the goodness.

By philippa [gb] Date 30.08.02 19:45 GMT
Hi there, two reasons for not cooking tripe, most importantly it is better for them raw, and secondly the smell of green tripe cooking is totally awful. I have not experienced the kind of tripe you are using. Do you think it has been bleached as its white? If you are going to mix tripe with her meal, I would use the green tripe.
By Pete [gb] Date 19.11.02 11:39 GMT
But surely... tripe is MINGIN!
By Pete [gb] Date 19.11.02 11:41 GMT
I ate tripe once, and my head fell off!!!

Lynne I don't know if this helps, but last week a guy had three big dogs outside
a Local pub,Quite a few people giving them a wide berth but I thought them real beauties so I ask the guy if I could stroke them and what breed was the dogs
he said [Lyon something] one was 15 stone one 12 stone and the other one 14 stone.and had another 6 dogs the same breed wife showed them .
all feed on tripe only [green tripe ] said the food bill alone each week was £200
but the dogs was so magnificant and gentle and he got this tripe direct said found
the add in dog world .

years back my bull terriers was feed on tripe from the pet shop but the smell was
really bad I had to feed them in the garden but they looked good on it .

Ho Patricia, where they Leonbergers? I doubt very much that the price he quoted was correct for his food bill :D I have 11 dogs , three of which are a giant breed, and all the rest are about GSD size, except one, and my food bill ( tripe and biscuit) comes to about £35.00 a week.
By patricia [gb] Date 30.08.02 15:50 GMT
Yes that was the breed really really hugh dog's I said to him they are quite a rare
breed really nice characters thought it a bit strange to have 9 of them ,But I suppose if his wife shows them he could have a few .

He must have a farm or a big property as the three he had would be a handful
and would not know what kind of volume the dogs eat .

I get my tripe from AMP - they are very reliable & deliver nationwide but they do have a minimum order of £35 so you need to have a freezer for storage. They supply various types of meat & in various grades ie finely minced or bigger chunks (for bigger dogs). Haven't had any problems with this company or their meat so would happily recommend them - have a look at their website for more info. Yes, raw tripe does pong a bit but nowhere near as bad as cooked tripe :-)

By Leigh Date 19.11.02 15:28 GMT
Green Tripe :-) Any that will eat it :D
By tradel [gb] Date 19.11.02 17:00 GMT
Shirl tripe is the cows stomach and any brred of dog will eat it including my yorkie.
By Iloveyorkies [gb] Date 19.11.02 20:33 GMT
OH!! I never would have guessed that! Thanks Leigh and Tradel for the info. Wow, it shows how much I know. I didn't think giving dogs or cats raw meat was healthy. I've got a lot to learn. :-) Shirl
