Hi
On our main computer somehow yesterday it got infected with a very horrid virus that is showing sites that are adult only. We have AVG free virus protection but it did not stop it and all the computer say is we need to buy a new virus protection starting at $49, its called antivirus live.

I have tried to get onto BT internet to download the free one they give with my account but it the website it goes to is to download this other virus protection. It wont allow me to access anything on the web.

I have been able to open computer in safe mode with networking so i can access the internet and download the bt one but i still cant get connected - i have unenabled the firewall and reset the home hub but still cant get on line properly even though in the wireless connection settings it says i have good signal strength to the hub.

PLEASE can anyone help before i part with my cash to get rid of these viruses and choose my own protection??

I know very little about computers but picked up a virus myself at the end of last year after Googling cheats for an online game for a friend, which is apparently notorious for viruses but nobody had told me because I don't usually play games!
My son-in-law who is a computer whizz tried to fix it in safe mode but couldn't and I now have a new hard drive.
I couldn't understand how with my anti virus I could have picked it up but apparently when you click on what appear to be innocent Google results, you are actually clicking through directly to a virus and so over riding the protection.
Hope that you have better luck than me.

thank you but couldn't down load anything.

Was going to give in and pay the money but then i saw a name MAGIC SOFTWARE INC so i gooled on the laptop and it is total fake! it makes you think have a virus but its malware so after a lot of research i have found how to get rid of it. Had to start in safe mode with networking which worked when i tried again and i am now running a scan and so far i have 14 infected objects.

I really hope this works when i re start in normal mode.

thats right it is a scam,  it keeps poping up telling you you have a virus,, and to buy.
the only thing that will stop it popping up is the Yahoo Anti spy,,,, you can run the test it takes a min,,,, then you can delete it

I wonder if this is a nasty piece of spyware rather than a virus. I use Lavasoft ad-ware. It used to pick things up that Norton didnt when i had Norton anti virus. If you can get into your pc try downloading the lavasoft free edition run it and see what comes up

all sorted - pheww. it was malware or trojan thing rather than virus but it makes you think you've got a virus and i was unable to get onto anything it just kept directing to payment site. It also wouldn't let me open any programs and i had alerts all over the desk along with unsavoury websites.

We were both out yesterday when it happened but we always leave the computer connected to internet so think we were just unlucky.

I heard yesterday that Internet Explorer - or it could have been Outlook Express (can't remember which one) is having major problems at the moment and that people are advised to turn their security settings up to high until they can sort the problem.

I use Avast for my anti virus and that picked up a Trojan Horse two days ago and sorted it for me.

a trojan and a virus are both malware.

you had a trojan

its IE

security hole when you access google via IE

microsoft dont have a patch yet

you can make your security settings high, which will block accesss to many sites

download and use firefox instead

IT Professional OH has recommended MalwareBytes, a free download, for anyone with malware on their machine :-)
