Hi,

Has anyone fed a bitch on Orijen during pregnancy and lactation. I am a bit worried that the calcium levels are too high for pregnancy (1.6-1.8%) and don't want to worry about bringing on eclampsia. Surely the high calcium is equivalent to supplementing with calcium in pregnancy - which I know is to be avoided.

Thanks in advance,

Trameg

Have you spoken to the people at Orijen? I'm sure they would be able to advise you.

Their telephone number is: 01737 767679

i would take that as a marketing strategy if that were me, not tht they dont know, but that it implies that it is too high for whelping bitches and they obviously dont want to move food brands

I wouldn't necessarily think that was the case. At the end of the day they are a food manufacturer and not dog breeder.

If it were me I would speak to my Vet, who is more likely to know and if they don't, surely they can check with their nutritional adviser. I might live in the ideal world, but at our Veterinary Practice, the Vet's are quite happy to look into anything on behalf of their clients.

Hi,

Thanks I will ask my vet. On their website it says during pregnancy increase by 10% and lactation by 50%.

Hi

I have weaned 3 litters on Orijen - large breed puppy and ESP on puppy. I always feed bitch the puppy food during the later stages of pregnancy and through lactating.
No problems at all and good milk and pups.

I also use some raw.

If your vet is is knowledgeable about feeding then do ask (mine isn't but very good at the non breeding stuff) or ask other breeders who have used Orijen.
