Hi my little girl is a medium breed and 6 weeks pregnant was scanned at 5 weeks we saw 4 or more but my question is her stomach is massive bigger than any of my others have been before does this necessarily mean its a big litter as she is only 6 weeks and looks like my other bitch who had 6 pups at 9 weeks pregnant lol

It could be a big litter or big pups.

Or she could be carrying lots of fluid, iv seen some very large bitches have small litters

my bitch last litter had six,but a freind of mine who has owned my breed for many years kept joking around saying be prepared for minimum 10.she was huge and just kept getting bigger and bigger.
the puppies were born big and were born according to the mating dates.
what i think im trying to say is i wouldnt go by the size of her,can you not have her x rayed so you know definate numbers?

It will be even with water retention, though to be honest re: her scan if you could actually see 4 or more then I've always doubled that (I have always been proved right and just use the scan to give me peace of mind, never a true indication) so, be prepared it may well all be pups, you never know............

You could try to palp and listen for heartbeats and give yourself an idea too. In agreement with everyone though, size of the bitch in whelp is no indication of litter size at all, I've seen bitches who hardly look 6 weeks and they have had large litters with pups hidden under rib cage etc, and large, 'I can hardly walk' bitches who have had just the average size litter.

I've even had my niece so huge (she was massive) and so petite have the midwives saying she was about to have a large child and she gave birth to a wee 6lb babe.

Just be prepared for anything.

My girl was scanned for 8, large breed and by the last week had a neat little bump and I was convinced there was only two as that was all I could feel, she went on to have 8!!!  So I'm guessing just like people size doesnt always go for anything.

My girl was small and scanned for 5.............she had 8, so size doesn't really mean anything, she was a lot bigger first time and had 5!

well ive had scans say 5 she had 13 lol .....1 said 4 she had 4 and 1 said 6 she  had 8 . so i never go by scan for numbers ,just to know if in whelp
