Hi there everyone i hope you can help.

What would you recommend i show my pug puppy in collar and lead wise? I have seen everyone at the ring craft class last night using half chain collers. Im just a bitty concerned i hurt his as the pug are well known for there breathing problems and fragile necks.

What would you say was the best one to use for training and shows?!...not for normal day to day life.

ps- i dont want to spend to much money cause hes growning like a bean just now. I may invest in a good leather set once hes a bit bigger. I was told at ring craft that he must face the oposit way than the way i placed him on the table(im left handed does anyone else find this uncomforatable thats a lefty?) I found i had to much lead to hold and position him at the same time! i was a bit argggggg!! haha

Don't panic too much about which way round you have him, very few judges insist on havgin them facing the right way, unless you come under an American judge.  We tend to stand our pugs in the direction they are happiest, when you watch a few pug classes you will see that whilst the majority are free standing in teh "right" direction, several will be the other way round.  Lots of leeway is made for naughty pug pups too, so concentrate on the basics and keeping him happpy, you don't have ot have him drilled into good behaviour too soon.  Lots of people show pugs on the lead/chain sets, but I like the very soft leather sets best.  For training I use soft plaited nylon, make sure the neck piece is not too narrow so it can cut in.  Will try and find some links to leads, I tend to buy mine at shows so can check out the softness and pliability.

If you are at any of the local open shows, look for Anna as she hand makes lead sets etc to measure.  And at very reasonable prices.  If you aren't at the shows you can give her a call. I'll PM her number to you.

When we start training a young dog for showing we start them off on hound leads which is like a soft rope (only for open all breed shows) because ours have folds under their necks (bullmastiffs), pups don't like the full chains, most judges don't say anything because we tell them why weve done it, after about 3/4 shows we phase to the chains so by the time they are ready for a Ch show they are used to the full chains.

We got cheap sets from the breed rescue stand where other members gave them to sell for the rescue.

when you place him on the table place the lead around your neck. Its not in the way then and your hands are free to position him

I have some of those, nice lightweight lead.  Not all of mine are happy on them.  These ones are lovely, but pricey:  http://www.jubileeleather.co.uk/   I am still trying to find the company which does the soft nylon ones I use.  If  you are going to Crufts the Whippet rescue stand has lovely, soft leather ones which fit a Pug beautifully, and only cost about £15, however you dont seem able to order them online.

These are nice show leads, but I don't like them for my baby pugs are they are a vew hard leather, the link I posted are in a soft lambskin type leather and have a slightly wider piece just under the throat so very kind and comfy for a pup.
