I have posted previously about getting a bitch to go with my two goldie boys, and wondering which breed to get. Someone at work is trying to rehome his 6 month old siberian husky bitch, only getting 'rid' due to lack of time and the fact that he couldn't handle all his dogs as he works. She is good with children and other dogs, chipped and housetrained. I have left a message, but I have no experience of huskies. I have done research into the breed and know that they cannot go off lead unless in an extremely secure enclosed area etc. I can easily take time off to spend with her and help her settle in with my two, and of course would get her to meet them a few times before potentially taking her home to make sure they're all happy together.

Do you think I'm stupid for considering this? Bear in mind she may have gone to another home by now, am just thinking what if. I would much rather give a dog a home that needs it than get it from a breeder that would already find lots of good homes for their babies.

You know every decision will be your own, it's your choice at the end of the day. Husky's need good handlers and you need to know what you are taking on, many breeders would not contemplate a husky going to someone with little experience of them.

If I'm going to be honest. If I had two GR's I wouldn't even think of adding a Husky to the mix, the breeds are just too different. I personally like to keep dog groups together or mix types which have things in common or will gel together regardless of size and trait, these two are just so totally different, I would never have gone out and put the breeds together myself.

But saying that at Christmas I have so many different breeds of family dogs in my home who all (bar an Akita) get on well. Who am I to say your crazy...........

But, if your asking would I purposely go out and put them together, no sorry but I just wouldn't.

I don't know - obviously in terms of what they were bred to do they are very different but in terms of compatability- they are both generally incredibly social breeds that love company and usually of both people and other dogs, they are both prone to chewing (read eating the house ) if not given enough stimulation.  Both active, dogs that needs mental as well as physical stimulation. Both have a good sense of humour.

I would say do lots and lots of research on Huskies though as they really do require quite a lot of time particularly when young (and they really can eat their way through sofas and walls if not sufficiently stimulated) - as a rule they aren't going to be happy with a couple of average walks a day and snooze the rest of the day at home but in tems of breed coompatability I don't see why not.

Thank you for your advice, we have decided against the husky and pointed a friend in their direction as she already owns two. We have found a 4 and a half month old dalmatian cross in the RSPCA that we have reserved, fingers crossed!

Sounds like the other people will be well suited to the Husky and congratulions on your new addition, even beter that it's a rescue

Breed rescue here is looking for a home for a 8 month old GR, if you're interested in another.  I was notified today as I had contacted them on behalf of a neighbour some time ago but the neighbour got a puppy from a shelter in the interim.

lmda, I would think another Golden is what you would be better looking at.   Dalmatians have a different character than a Golden, more active & they need more guidance to make sure they behave.

Hi ChristineW, thanks for your advice. We had a dalmatian when I was younger with our golden and it worked out great, this girl has a lovely temperament. My two are quite active for goldens, so I shouldn't think that would be a problem. We are always happy to spend a lot of time training and guiding our dogs. Thanks again though I really appreciate this advice from everyone. x
