Ditto! :-)
Marianne. Dogs are not our whole lives, there are cats too!

I'd be pleased to be known as the strange woman with the dogs, you get all that unconditional love, they don't want their clothes washed and ironed, don't roll in late from the pub and they eat whatever you put infront of them!!!!

Seriously, I have turned into a right old grump when it comes to Valentines day, I hate the shops cashing in on it and telling us when and how we should show our love. I notice a well known store dine in for two offer (normally £10) is now Valentines dine in for two £20!!!! I'd rather my husband surprised me with flowers at other times of the year (which he does)

Just think how much your dogs adore you and be pleased that Mr J Wellbeloved has remembered you, by rights he should have sent one to me but it looks like he is fickle and I have been spurned!!

Me too!  I expect mine will be in the post.

However.....I got an unexpected invite to supper, from a friend that is also on her own.  sweet. I am looking forward to it.

I also noticed that in M&S today all cashing in makes me sick .
Faithful and true to the last beat of his heart.

I'm not complaining, my OH has suggested he takes me out for a curry!
What is more, my youngest declared  "I'm not coming, it's for you and dad for valentines".
Hooray.......Sunday dinner taken care of.

My thoughts exactly !!!

Oh dear!! I know how you feel - this year we have finally become the 'old married couple'. Hubby decided to go for long weekend in the Lakes following a meeting in Shropshire, and I'm going on a judging seminar in Suffolk. Very romantic!
By Carrington (****) [gb] Date 13.02.10 20:43 GMT
At least to be fair Valentines has a real meaning and message behind it, I'm all for promoting love, it's a happy, nice feeling and it doesn't need to be a very expensive time, no-one has to buy a very expensive present it's not like Christmas or a Birthday. Just a card or one rose normally does it for most people, it's just the thought that counts and Valentines brings a lot of joy to a lot of people. :-) It also brings a lot of engagements, it's a happy time, so as much as yes, it is a money making day for some, it does bring a nice feeling to a lot of people. The world needs love and if one day a year pushes that word it's not a bad thing for me.

I admit I've gone through years when it wouldn't have bothered me to celebrate at all. When your married and you know your loved who needs a card to prove it? But, I'm glad that my hubby has always kept it alive. I think more now that the boys are grown it is nice that my hubby still wants to take me out for a meal and we give each other a card.
Though to be fair we usually write funny poems to each other now, we know we love each other.

For Sam and all the others who have got a Valentines from your dog that's brilliant :-) Good old JW (Isn't that nice of them) It's not rock bottom :-D Bless, Valentines is about love, and who loves us more than our dogs, you know your loved and it's honest, real love that is all that Valentines is about. :-)

Not singling out Carrington in partiular here, but hers was the post that struck home most, and being Mrs Pedantic who's had it up to here with this dreadful verbal shorthand which has grated at me on the TV ads all evening ...

"Valentines."

It's "St Valentine's Day".

I got:

12 colour-coded locks and keys for the kennels from one male volunteer ;-)

2 floodlights and a CCTV camera from another male volunteer ;-)

and 40 Milbemax worming tabs from my vet, also male.

Hmmm, my luck must be in *ggg*

The only kiss I got today was from a 15yr Border T with no teeth and stinking breath!!
By saffismum (*) [gb] Date 14.02.10 09:12 GMT
Aw!

No romance for us here, hubby is snoring away, the cat threw up all over the doorstep and the dogs pinched my new box of tissues and shredded them...................sigh!

I have always told hubby not to buy before or on St Valentine's day but after..............being a skinflint (ahem!) I'd prefer flowers that aren't that extortionate price.............

He tells me he loves me everyday and when I am down or been ill (like recently, had a horrendous cough and cold) he'll get me chocolate and a decent horror movie!
By karenclynes (**) [gb] Date 14.02.10 09:25 GMT
Saffis mum :-D very romantic morning.  I don't think there's anything wrong with it - I agree with Carrington, it's nice for people to remember to show they love each other.  Yes people cash in on it but they always do and at least this is for adults, so everyone is able to make their own decision about whether they bow down to ther advertising or not.

When I had a partner I too was much more tickled with the occasional surprise of flowers or a a booked meal for no reason but it's nice for some people who don't generally have time or have partners who aren't spontaneous to have a time when they can express they love each other. I always think a hand made card and a bunch of flowers mean a lot more than anything really expensive.

I have been single for ten years and having not taught the dogs or cats to write yet, it's been a while since I've had a 'valentines day' :-D and find it sweet when friends get all excited about their cards and little token pressies.

Hubby did the night shift last night keeping an eye on the mum and pups so I managed to get 5 hrs sleep in bed...WOW it felt so good!
I've just got back from an hrs play with my boy on the field, (the girls went back to bed with hubby). My boy always makes me feel so loved. He is as good as gold and never leaves my side and is always so happy to be out on his own with me throwing his ball for him. Its a giant sized horse ball (about the size of a football with a handle) and he carries it so proudly on his walk to and from the field and people we pass always comment how cute he is. It was a really lovely walk that has left me feeling calm and loved....what more could you ask for on Valentine's day even if it is from one of my dogs!!!!
By lmda (*) [gb] Date 14.02.10 09:58 GMT
We don't celebrate Valentine's day, I just don't see the point in it to be honest. Why people feel pressured to buy someone a card to say I love you on one random day of the year, I don't know. Hubby has bought me a card though.....I didn't get him one....oops.
By Merlot (***) [gb] Date 14.02.10 12:41 GMT
Well I am just an Old romantic then !! I love St Valentines Day, Hubby and I always exchange cards and the odd pressy (Not every year)we usually go out for a meal, but I was surprised this morning by a dozen deep red roses. Love him! I worked till 10pm last night and will be again tonight so it cheered my day up no end. After having to call the boys in blue no less than THREE times yesterday to deal with and remove some very obnoxious patients.

By Pookin (**) [gb] Date 14.02.10 12:46 GMT
Haha, same here, me and the OH weren't doing cards and that this year because we're going out for the day to an aquarium instead but he got me a huge bunch of roses and I got him nothing! I was wandering why I could hear him getting up while I brushed my teeth at 7 this morning (he never gets up early on sun) and when I asked why he said he was letting the dogs out for a wee, I thought what the hell?! I'm taking them for a walk now? But really he had the flowers hidden in the car and wanted to go get them. Wish I had a vase now :-)
More dogs please
By lmda (*) [gb] Date 14.02.10 12:56 GMT
Oh Pookin we're mean aren't we! Our poor men. :-)
By Pookin (**) [gb] Date 14.02.10 13:13 GMT
I know, very bad. He always says he doesn't believe in cards (I think he's a fool though because I know they exist, I've seen them!), so I don't think he'll be complaining :-)
More dogs please

My son's girlfriend turned up at 10am this morning (surprisingly just as I was serving up breakfast ;-) ) She had a wee present for my son with a lovely card, he has tropical fish and she had bought him one that he had wanted guess what he has called it? Valentine :-) Ahhhh.........

Hope that everyone is having a lovely day. :-)
By lmda (*) [gb] Date 14.02.10 13:45 GMT
Haha! No mine won't complain either, he knows I'm a miserable git when it comes to Valentine's day. I'll just buy him a pint later! He'll appreciate that much more.

Carrington I have to admit, that is vom inducingly sweet :-) hope he got her something nice in return!
By Dogz (***) [gg] Date 14.02.10 17:35 GMT
I knew a lady (now passed away) who was named Valentine, as this was her birthday.

My OH cooked me a lovely thai meal last night (ww of course !!) and gave me a card and a beautiful necklace ....... I got him a card ( well we had said we werent doing presents !!) BUT I did decide not to go to our club champ show today and took him and the dogs on a 6 mile hike round the new forest instead !!!
Hit goal weight back in May .... could still do with losing a bit more though !!
By Carrington (****) [gb] Date 15.02.10 08:55 GMT

Oh yes, two dozen red roses and a heart charm for her bracelet. He also cooked her spaghetti bol whilst hubby and I went out for our lovely Valentine's meal, we were having a giggle that they were probably reinacting that scene from Lady And The Tramp. :-D

I also think it is a lovely middle name for anyone who had a child on Valentines day it would do for a boy or a girl. :-)

Oh how lovely! What a nice young man you've raised :-)
By LucyDogs (***) [gb] Date 15.02.10 10:50 GMT
I'd have to point out that although Christmas is over-commercialised, it does kind of have a rather important meaning and message, at least to Christians!
