You appear to be considering a wide range of breeds and IMHO it would be a good idea to do some research into what the breeds were bred for originally and this will give you a good idea of their characteristics and predispositions.

A Weimaraner for example belongs to the HPR group and has a much different outlook to life than a Labrador; they were bred to have a high degree of initiative and originally used to hunt wounded stag and boar and despatch foxes and cats!

Discover Dogs at Crufts will be manned by enthusiasts who will give you a warts and all view of their breeds.

Yes the original post was for completely varied breeds, however we feel that firstly we need to go on something that is a similar size, then the amount of time grooming (we would prefer short coat) then how much exercise they could cope with (by asking breeders and owners) then or maybe before the exercise see what they were bred to do (i.e a hound may not be the best idea for us doing alot of off lead walking) then look into showing history and contact breeders associated with the breed club and decide who we are happy with and then go on a waiting list for a potential show pup. We are probably looking for a couple of years time as this investigating will take time and we want our boys to be settled for a while.

We are going to crusts anyway to have a nose at the breeds and a chat to breeders on ones we like the look of :-)
