Well its happened, I kind of new it would only be a matter of time before one of my lot worked it out,
never thought it would be my younger Bully tho, always thought my Zeus (Rottie) would rummble it first,

But no it seems the bullys the brains in this pack,
He's only gone a worked out how to open the front door , jumps up on the handle and pulls it down with his paw till it opens , lil git,

means now we have to lock it with a key from the inside All the time,

when me and my mum caught him doing it today he had it open in seconds and shot out into the front garden spun around a few times looking really proud of himself then looked at me with that cheeky face almost like he's smiling at you ,
more like laughing at me i think,

going to have to be extra careful now ,

as a kid i had a Rottie who would open the front door all the doors in the house and even get into our bath and paw at the cold tap till the water came out then played with the trickle coming from the tap he was a funny dog with a mind of his own,

what do your dogs do that they maybe shouldn't
I love dogs...it's humans that annoy me

Mine do this too, except the other way round -for many years now they have opened the door in from the garden to let themselves in unless the back door is locked, so it's become habit to have it locked at all times. It really is quite clever, isn't it. :-)

Roxie, one of my Malinois, will open kitchen cupboards when she is bored to find something to carry around -usually a frying pan or sauce pan. Always happens when it rains and she can't be outdoor as much as usual!
Marianne. Dogs are not our whole lives, there are cats too!

Buster is great, apart from still trying to steal food off us occasionally or try to eat food he's found on a walk, he doesn't really do things he shouldn't. He will shut kitchen cupboard doors/draws that have been left open (my OH being the biggest culprit mad ), but that's quite handy :-)
I don't know with Buster how much of his 'lack of mischief' is to do with his lack of inteligence (it's hard to tell how smart or dumb he really is confused ), or how much is to do with lack of drive - ie. he's just too lazy to bother with anything (OR he knows how to get me to do everything for him, LOL).

My sisters dog is a female Boxer - she is one smart dog! They have to leave the doors locked as she can open them to get in or out (getting out requires her to push the handle down, keep it held down whilst pulling the door towards her) .

She also figured out how to open the garden gate, to do that she has to lift a small latch, keep it lifted while pulling the gate towards her eek It's not just the fact she figured this out that is amazing it's the 'dexterity' involved - very impressive! However, it means that they have to leave a rope looped over the gate post to stop her getting out, but the rope has to be caught under the gate catch or she'll lift it off and then open the latch.

Also, no small drink bottle can be left around as she will hold it between her paws, twist the lid off and actually tip the bottle to drink from!!! My sister used to have a dogs drink bottle to take water on walks, I think that may have helped the dog figure out the 'tip it up' bit, but still very, very impressive.

One of my Dobe's does this as well with the front door, which is now locked at all times. In fact all the internal door handles have had to be changed to knobs to prevent her getting in to every room in the house!

I've had that happen in the past as well. I now take the bottom bolt out completely when I go out because Hamish, bless him, always lays against the bottom of the door waiting for me to get back.

My Vic is a door opener as well, I live in an old cottage so all the inside doors have press down latches so all he has to do with those is jump up at them, thankfully he only does this on two occasions.

When our friend Bob stays over Vic will let himself into the spare room in the morning and kiss him awake while wiggling madly, and if he's ever had a telling off the first thing he does is run upstairs and open all three doors before coming back down to his bed with a smug look on his face.

My OH reckons he's saying 'You think I was being naughty earlier? Well, I could trash this joint while you go out but I don't, so maybe you should let me have that slipper I wanted...'

He was an evil puppy as well who had a million and one ways to open a baby gate so trying to keep him in the kitchen during the housetraining phase was a headache! Luckily there's no way he can open the front door :-)
More dogs please

Our male used to open doors, once he opened the front door (kids were home) he was locked in the kitchen at the time, opened kitchen door, hall door then front door, i had gone out for a walk, saw this gsd running towards me in the woods, the naughty boy had opened the front door, crossed a busy main road and found me in the woods, i nearly died with fright, after that front door was permanently locked, and all handles turned upside down, he was so lucky not to have been killed, he couldnt understand afterwards why he couldnt open the doors anymore.

That didn't work with Hattie, she still managed to open them, hence the door knobs!

I hate to tell you this but a Friends Welsh springers could open both handles and knobs, and she had to put latches/bolts on all doors.

OMG, clever Hattie, we dont live there anymore, so he cant get out, if he did open a door he would only get into our back garden which is very secure, our front door we struggle to open ha ha! they too clever for their own good arent they?

Shhhhhhh! Don't tell Hattie that, so far it has worked! At least if she does get out the front door, she is only in a fully fenced garden with a double bolted gate!

when I was a kid one of our Afghans could open the locked caravan door then open the zip of the awning to get out !!  My Irish can open my mums back door but they dont tend to bother at home.
Hit goal weight back in May .... could still do with losing a bit more though !!

Mine can let themselves in but haven't yet worked out that you have to pull to get out :-)

Well.....When one of my lot worked out how to open all of the doors, we turned the handles upside down thinking this would fool him....YEAH RIGHT!!! Took all of five minutes. So we now have twisty door handles (technical term I know!) on all the internal doors and a thumb turn on the front door. Now they just try to dig their way through instead!

Door knobs for us too - Treacle would push the handle down to get out but she wasn't very skillful and scratched all the door too! When I got the cats I had to be sure that the dogs would stay in the kitchen as the cats had the run of the house during the day - hence door knob was put on kitchen door and no more escapes!
