Hi everyone

I am new to the forum and have a query I wonder if anyone can help me with....

I have a 5 year old bitch who has had 2 previous litters...the first at 2 1/2 yrs  (6 pups, no probs) the 2nd at 4 yrs -had a section for singleton pup (sire had 3 litters of singletons and is now neutered).

She is now 5 and with the vets approval was mated (with 25 min ties) on days 11 (21st Feb) and 13. She was different throughout this season....more flagging and even humping the cat!

She then developed a dark brown odourless discharge 3 days ago. She is well in herself, eating and playing. No temperature. Took her to the vets yesterday who said we would treat her for an infection, even though he wasn't convinced it was an infection and has given her synulot for a week.

My concern is that the vet said he doesn't think she will be in pup because of the discharge and Of course I can't scan her yet.

Has anyone else experienced this?

she is still in season so I would expect some kind of show for another 8 days or so, as long as it isnt green and smelly ..the vet is just covering himself if she is fine in herself , no temperature etc .

Why????   The sire doesn't dictate how many pups are conceived, the bitch does.

But, to your discharge, my bitches bleed throughout mating and to the end of the normal season, so I would find it normal.  And if it isn't smelly, I would see no reason for her not to be pregnant to be honest.

You say that your vet didn't think it was an infection, so try not to worry, and remember that she is quite probaby going to produce pups for you! 

Thanks Starry eyes......was concerned as her season doesn't usually last this long....23 days today. The discharge is definately not green/smelly and she is absolutely fine in herself so here's hoping.

the sire was tested after producing 3 x singleton pups from proven multi litter bitches and was found to have very low fertility.

It is reassuring to know that other bitches bleed/discharge right through their season...my bitch normally stops a few days after mating.

Aww congratulations.

My bitch has had a slight discharge intermittently too since being mated.  Our Vet said it varies in colour too and is perfectly normal, as long as not green or smelly as mentioned.  We found out she is pregnant on Monday and due 23 April

A brilliant day for names; that's Shakespeare's birthday as well as St George's Day - just think of all those Shakespearean names to choose from!

And your sign in name is not unlike Thisbe who is mentioned in 2 of Shakespeare's plays - Romeo & Juliet (Although that's a tragedy so I'd skip that!) and Midsummer Nights Dream, which is my favourite play and where my Mia (Hermia) gets her pet name from.

Hi Christine, my sign in name is Thisby because it was the name of my first horse.....who was named after Midsummer Nights Dream. Unfortunately, the stud spelt it wrong!! Hermia (Mia) is a lovely name. I'm looking forward to a 'Mac' 'Beth' 'Lia' and hopefully a 'Romeo' or 'Juliet' ! x

Some of the puppies I've named have had abbreviated names or the owners have kept the Shakespearean names.  Charm (Charmian), Lia (Cordelia), I kept Curtis as his KC name (Taming of the Shrew), Mopsa stayed Mopsa.  I kept a 'Miranda' and that was her pet name.
