I have a young lady here on her 13th day of season and my boy is still not paying any real attention, he has a sniff and a taste but then just wanders off, should I just take it as she is not ready yet? They've been flirting and are sitting together. I think if I recall my spitz bitch didn't mate till day 17 but just miethering now that he's being so laid back about it.

I would say she is not ready yet. Dogs tend to know Day 11-13 is only an average. One of my bitches is day 8 the other day 20. The dogs can be very uninterested until its time, then its almost as if a switch has been turned on.

Not all dogs make good studs. Some just don't want to mate even if the bitch is at her peak. But I suspect she isn't ready yet.

When my girls are in season and I bring him home when season is nearly over he is wild to mate with them so I'm hopefull she's not at her peak yet.

Having just had a bitch mated on days 20 - 22 (neither maiden, and she was mated days 18 - 20 last time), it is likely she is not ready, but of course a maiden dog sometimes does not get the hang of things, so unless you have progesterone tests done you won't know.

Well it seems she was just not ready, my boy was showing a bit of interest yesterday so after having no sleep because I slept upstairs with bitch and husband downstairs with boy I came down at 5 so hubby could go to bed was up 5 min and we have a 10 minute tie.

A good stud dog should be like this. 

Nothing worse than a dog who pesters a bitch when not ready, and not a very reliable indicator of the right time. 

A dog who waits for the right moment is an asset, saves having to take blood for testing, something I prefer not to have to do, as it's not exactly a nice thing to have to have done to them, especially going back for several tests.

Yes I was hopefull kiks would know when was right as he's always been very good with the girls that live with him, but then as we was begining to get later onto the cycle I was starting to worry and this has been planned for a very long time now.
Fingers crossed for good news in a few weeks time.

Like kiks, my stud boy will only sit with them (very close so no other dog gets a chance ) and he is always right.  I like it that he doesn't keep pestering the girls.  And I think it's great that they know better than us! 

Yes i'm glad he's not a sex pest coz we all know how the ladies give the guys in the pub that are like that a wide birth :D
