i had a litter of 6 puppies born 9 days ago.  all  seemed fine to begin with but 3 of the pups started to fall behind the others with regards to losing weight and not feeding very well. mum had been checked and after a couple of days i noticed one of the pups eyes was swollen.  Took the 3 little ones to vets they gave antibiotic drops and i was told to bathe it regularly which i did, within a day or so it leaked pus etc.  Swelling has gone now and im bathing it regularly and giving antibiotics. But ive noticed now that one of the other smaller pups has got a swelling on her eye.  I have started giving her the antibiotics now hoping that it can clear up the infection. I would like to know if anyone has experienced this in a litter before and also im very concerned that the eyes may be damaged in some way as they are not open yet and still developing. I have read somewhere that an infection can be caught from the birth canal while their being delivered.

It could be that they are just passing the infection from one pup to the other, they could all need treating with antibiotics at the same time.   A quick word with your vet should sort them out.

I had a puppy (singleton) last year who after a few days post birth had a swollen eye. I was given antibiotic drops for oral use & then when the eye opened had some drops for her. The eye was much later to open than the good eye but when it did open it was all cloudy
the swelling did start to go down when she was about 9 weeks old but she remained blind although I do think she could see shapes. She went to a good home and lives a normal life.

I still reckon your pups all have some infection and need antibiotics, not just topical treatment -it ties in with what I said in your other thread, healthy pups don't lose weight and die and get eye infections -SOMETHING is wrong. If it was my pups I'd definitely get antibiotics into them ASAP.

they have had antibiotic drops which im giving twice daily. the first pups eye looks normal nd started to give it to the other as soon as i noticed the swelling. my other 3 pups are thriving and are really big healthy pups.
