Is Bamboo Poisonous to dogs? We have a dog run with a bamboo that creates shade over the side of the kennel to keep it cool during the summer, and mum is planning to put any puppies we have up there when they are old enough to have some fresh air (obviously we would be with them).

But I was wondering when I go home over easter weather I would have to dig it out, its about 12 foot high and about 5 foot wide so quite a dig.

There is a list of poisonous plants here http://www.doggyhelp.com/plants.php I can't see bamboo on there apart from one called heavenly bamboo, but I don't think that is what you are talking about.  Anyway, pandas seem to like it. lol

I doubt it is poisonous - we eat it! (And so do dogs if you ever share a chinese take-away, lol). Bamboo shoots... are shoots from bamboo :-)

I have bamboo in my garden. Last year we re-aranged the garden so we had to move the bamboo, it was very hard to shift as it'd been in for several years, but Buster had great fun helping us dig it out. He got a bit carried away and started to snap it off above ground by the mouthfull and drag it everywhere *rollyeyes*, he never actually ate any but chewed plenty and never had any ill effect :-)

Jade teethed on bamboo, she used to pick a couple of canes then take great delight in shredding them into thousands of pieces. I did check with the vet to see if it was safe, and his only concern was for the bamboo!!

I'd be wary of the dried bamboo canes - the splinters are dreadful! But a green bamboo 'stalk' - no reason why that wouldn't be a very nice chew toy to be crushed and shredded. If you lived in the tropics you could get green bamboo stalks as thick as your arm.... I bet dogs would love to demolish one of those.

It was the live bamboo she chewed. We used to have a 20 foot line of bamboo that grew to about 10 feet tall and 5 feet wide, you would hear a loud rustling sound, then she would appear from the middle of the bamboo, proudly dragging her trophy behind her. I am sure the pruning helped as everyone used to be amazed at the size of our bamboo screen, our neighbour loved it and bought some from the same supplier, but his never took of like ours did.
