Windows xp used to have the option to view pictures in a folder as a slide show, not sure if vista or windows 7 do. Picasa has the option also to view photos in a folder as a slide shown and as a last resort, depending on what they want the slide show for, powerpoint is a good alternative. With power point you can set the transition styles as well as changing slide automatically or on a mouse or keyboard stroke.

Picasa lets you burn a cd from your photos.  It's a free download and you can also upload the photos to the internet and set the privacy setting as you wish.

Just guessing here but would Open Office not have a free version of something similar to Microsoft's Powerpoint?

Edited it to add: Yes open office has something called Impress which could be used for slide shows.
