I buy my dog food in 15k bags - one food for the dachsies and one for the GSD- and have always kept it in the garage unitl this winter I found that I  have mice coming in at night.  I am therefore wanting to buy two containers to hold 15k of food that will seal it and hence not attract the mice.  I have found one that will take 11k and would go with that as the other is much bigger but I wondered if anyone else has found a good container I could consider that won't cost the earth (saw one for over £100 - fab but expensive!)

I use plastic dustbins (not the wheely bins the old style) they have catches on the side, to tightly shut them, not expensive neither.

Plastic won't keep mice at bay, so I'd go for the good old-fashioned galvanised dustbins.

ETA: 1 Dustbin will hold 2 15kg sacks.

I keep our nosh in a tall, stainless steel pedal bin ... yes, tall, clever dogs can get into it but the mice will have a hell of a job, unless they work in partnership!!

I have a big bin for dog food never used it as i buy the 3kg bags that reseal, when i buy the 8.5kg sacks i just use some bulldog clips to keep it fresh

I bought plastic bins from B & Q with flip top lids - hold 15k fine.  So far mice not been in them and I've had them for about 4 years now.

This is what I use too and while the dogs will happily raid the normal bin, they never go near the dog food bin, which I guess says a lot about complete food compared to kitchen leftovers

Yes the dog food manufacturers supply plastic bins. 
I've used plastic dustbins for 20+ years including when we've had a rat problem and they've never tried to get in......

Thanks folks.  I have dashed to B&Q today to buy a couple of dustbins as I am away for the weekend and now have mice under the sink too!!!  But sadly the only clip on lid ones had air holes!!!

Make sure you get a few mouse traps too or you could find yourself over run with the vermin !

Unfortunately we already were.  Think most of the adults have been caught and some smaller ones but now traps not going off so we think the mice are too small to be caught as bait as disappeared.  So it is the council in on Monday to sort out!!

I have one that is a metal dustbin, from ikea. Asda has a special one on sale at the moment a large grey swing bin top I think it was £4.00 check it out! I paid more than that for my large grey bin.

We live in the sticks where rats are the main problem, they chew through anything. Oak doors, window frames, pipes etc, We have an old fridge,( several old fridges in fact ) in an out building,  gutted and laid on its back, so the door is on top. This is ideal for our animal food and the weight of the door holds it shut and rat proof. Need to drill a small hole through for ventilation, but apart from that it keeps the food safe and fresh.

Good luck getting rid of the mice.  We've had the same problem which came to light when I went to move a bag of food we had won.  The bag was the right shape, the little blighters had chewed a hole in the bottom of the bag and eaten every bit of it....  The cat quite enjoyed stalking the garage every night for the plump little mices!

I have a "rubbermaid "  airtight one inside ,   it holds a 15 kg bag of food.

Also have the normal plastic snap shut  bin outside to hold the spare bag of food, have used this for yrs, and as yet the mice have not managed to gain entrance , and it has stayed water tight.

I use the larger of one of these.  They are great, and also as the food gets used up the storage bag concertinas down, so it hardly takes up much room.
