Hi,  I will soon be moving house and it doesn't come with a ready installed washer and I cannot take my integrated one with me.  I am thinking of getting a Miele but they are extortionately expensive.  The latest models out start at £699 (the cheapest I could find). 

Has anyone got one and are they really worth the expense? 

Yes I think so

I once had an Indesit that lasted 15+ years but generally most washing machines seem predisposed to conking out after only a few years.

My Miele W1714 is brilliant, and I genuinely think it washes better than any other machine I've owned.  I use the 30min express wash more than I would have thought and even that does a great job.  I like the fact I can adjust temp and spin speed to suit every type of wash.  Additionally the honeycomb drum is great for dog hair: it keeps much of the dog hair in and only requires a quick wipe afterward to remove it.  This means it doesn't clog up the filter either, which is handy, but the filter is easy to empty too

Thank you.  I forgot to ask how they managed dog hair.  The bottom of the range come with a 5 year guarantee and others seven years.  How long have you had yours?

I wish we had gone for one tbh, the one we have the filter gets blocked up and as its so low we have to lift up the machine to empty it out .

Our work have an industrial Miele and they put it on for 10 mins and the bedding is clean and spun!!! Prob a few £k's for that...

Make sure that the filter is not too low to the ground that you can't place a container under it should you need to clean that out when you make your decision...

Some cheaper models can have quite a small capacity so far from being economical you end up having to wash more often !. We didn't go for Miele but made sure we had 8kg capacity.

We have a Miele washing machine.  We bought it because it was supposed to be quiet - its not and I hate it.  If it weren't for the fact that it was so expensive I would change it tomorrow.

Our machine is only just 2 years old but my mum has had 2 Miele WM's - the first lasted over 15 years and her current one must be nearly 8.  One of the reasons I got mine is that she has such good things to say about Miele and I had a chance to see how they perform before getting mine.

I haven't noticed noise as a particular issue but it's in the utility room so I don't really hear it anyway. 

It is all personal choice obviously, but I don't see the point of spending a huge amount on a washing machine that will last for years and years. During those years other makes/models will come along and very possibly be more efficient and more economical. Miele have longer guarantees but you pay for that in the price. Do the actually make their own washing machines ?. Possibly do, but Miele don't make their own refrigeration - our Fridge Freezer is a Liebherr........and they make Fridge Freezers for Miele. Put them side by side in the showroom and only the name on the front is different - apart from the price of course - Liebherr costing a lot less even though it's identical !.

I think white goods should be made to last.  I might choose to upgrade if I want different options in the future but I shouldn't be forced into it by shoddy manufacturing and built-in obsolescence.  The majority of parts in an old fridge or washing machine cannot be recycled and much of it cannot be disposed of in an economical or ecologically friendly way.

There is big demand for, and high residual value in, secondhand Miele washing machines.  You can still upgrade long before the machine has died and walk away with cash in your pocket.  Another way of looking at the cost v benefit perhaps...

We went into our local appliance shop which sells Mieles (amongst all the other usual makes) and spoke to the salesman, he said that unless we are heavy users then perhaps it would be best to go for a slightly less robust model such as a Siemens which also have a long guarantee and long life but not as long lived as the Miele ie he said a Miele would last perhaps 7-10 years and a Miele 10-15 years.  The Siemens was £200 cheaper and was more attractive and had a new design drum called a teardrop which should be good on dog hair.  Noise will not be an issue because it will be in a utility room.  Good point on the filter, I'll have to check it out on the Siemens.  Both models are German and have very good reputations. 

Then again Asda are selling a Zanussi for £247!  Aaaaagh it's so difficult. 

I LOVE Miele WMs and have had 2
and 1 Bauknecht ( the absolute best) but was talked  into a John Lewis own make this time.... very poor in comparison Im afraid.

Dont remember any noise issues with the Miele.

I would strongly recommend Bosch--mine is now 12 years old and has never needed any repair, deals well with dog hair etc.

Thanks Jay, very timely - I was just considering Bosch!  I know that Siemens and Bosch use the same parts etc and I had a dishwasher by Bosch in my old house and was very pleased with it.
