hi my girl is fingers crossed 4 1/2 weeks pregnant, i am always reading the threds to learn new things.Can anyone advise what they think is the best milk post whelp then weaning.I have used the evaporated milk but my vet was horrified ,i also used the powdered goats milk the vet still did not like.Im toying with goats milk from supermarket (is it the full fat one to buy )or royal canin your thoughts would be much apreciated

When I've had to bottle feed I've used the Royal Canin Babydog Milk, but for pups up on their feet have used full fat goats milk from Asda....lol.

I'm going to try Nutrolac with my next litter as several breeders of my breed have recommended it.

With our last litter, we gave whole goat's milk from Asda too...lol! Pups did really well on it and loved it! We started giving it at the start of weaning.

Sorry, but in my experience of the last year, many vets have a considerable lack of knowledge about breeding, fertility and reproductive matters and puppy rearing. Personally I would take advice from the folk on this forum re this type of subject!

I was researching the threads a couple of months ago, my litter arrived Saturday. I've no intention of feeding my pups myself, my girl's got a fabulous set of teats equipped to do that herself. However, I did, after reading threads and getting advice, get some NutroLac, just in case I needed to hand rear, and as an option to give in addition to their feed once onto solids. I've just broken into the Nutro Lac today for Mum and she loves it. I ordered a 500g tub and have just put in another order for a bigger tub. I'd recommend if getting one, go for the big tub straight away.

I will be giving this to my pups, as said, in addition to their solids once they're weaning, plus I'll give them fresh goat's milk - full fat.

What I have gleaned about Nutro Lac is there is no looseness in the stools.

Whole goats milk is what I was advised last time, and my girl is loving it this time round too. Turns her nose up at plain glucose and water now. She also looks pretty miffed when I alternate the chicken / fish / mince meal with a kibble meal!

Supermarket is just goats milk. Nutro Lac has other things & is intended as a milk replacer ... ingredients are:
whey, protein powder, blended veg oil, hydrolised wheat gluten, Vits & Mins, calcium barbonate, DL mehione, citric acid, BHT as permitted antioxidant.

Must admit that I was a tad alarmed when I got the tub ... my crowd are wheat gluten free and I don't do BHTs. However, it seems to come highly recommended, and I'm not sure that I would want to use any of the other milk replacers out there.

Have given it to my girl today as I just feel she needs a bit extra, she's doing a tremendous feeding job. Hope this helps.

The Nutrolac is a puppy formula based on goats milk rather than cows milk.  So it is suitable for rearing puppies where straight goats milk or cows milk would not be, but straight goats is fine as an addition to an older pups diet.

I start mine on puppy food as soon as I know they are in whelp, but don't increase the amount of food until they are 6 weeks, by birth they are on half as much again as normal.

I like Esbilac it is in a tin ready made up. This is great with tiny teats as no little lumps of powder to clog the teat. Once opened it can be kept for 72 hours or frozen, I freeze in plastic ice cube bags and each cube is appox 3 oz which is ideal for top up feed if needed. It has a long shelf life too and is very easy to store and use
