Don't know what they are for but I guess it is the number of posts you have made, if so why has my number dropped from 4 to 3? Not that it matters but I am a bit puzzled. Does it mean that a load of my posts have been deleted?

Wonder if it's todo with forum where threads are deleted periodically?

The number boundaries have changed.

1 star  - 50 posts
2 stars - 250 posts
3 stars - 1000 posts
4 stars - 5000 posts
5 stars - 25000 posts

Oh! if that happened this morning that is why the change, you know when I used to post under my affix I don't remember there being any stars at all it was only after I came back and used a different user name that I noticed them at all. As I said unimportant but I wondered if posts were being deleted and if so perhaps I had better use the search and print some of those I go back to every now and again.

I've only just noticed this, I was on 5 and now down to 3!!.. Not that it matters at all, shows that I like to talk (too much sometimes)...
Just wondered if we need stars though? Does it make any difference to anyone whether we have them or not?

Can't see it is of any help, it does not tell you the experience of the poster only the amount they post - as I said I am sure that when I posted on here under my affix there were none but my memory is not what it was. Think you soon find out the posters who are of help and whose opinions you trust and I would think it would be different people for each of us as we are likely to agree with those who agree to us.

LOL Paula, at my age I would not stand a chance, would have to be posting 24/7 and I still would not live long enough, have my doubts I would even get my 4 back. TBH I had no idea what they were for anyway so it is not that much of a worry but I will steer clear of any 5 star owner for fear of not getting a word in edgeways.

How embarrassing, it is too delicate to ask where you have lost them from but one can imagine - we had all be sure to hang on to the remaining ones or who knows what we will be exposing might even be a bigger flag.

Well, you and I do have 3 stars and a flag to help retain our dignity just imaging how those who have dropped to one star must feel. Do think this sudden stripping of our assets have left some feeling out in the cold perhaps the vigour of the stripping was too large.

On a more serious note I do wonder why the need to make this reduction - when I look at a new forum I judge it by the number of posters who have obviously been on that forum for a long while, (the number of 4 & 5 stars around). If there are loads then I feel the forum may be worth joining but if there are only a few I give it a wide berth so I do wonder why this has proved necessary. Dare say there is some technical reason for the downgrading or perhaps there is a need to thin out the numbers.

If you just read Unread Posts then you don't see the stars anyway, so it makes no difference.

Oh - and never confuse quantity of posts with quality of posts ... (No names mentioned!!)

Now I always use the Active topics, not that it makes any difference I have been on this site so long it is of no interest. Do take your second point and feel this may be inclined to increase the amount of quantity only posts - mind you there should be room for fun posts surely.

Mind you if this hike is to try to decrease the number of nonsense posts it may well back fire. There obviously was a good reason and my nature means I am curious and wonder what it was, probably something very boring like bandwidth or something

Well just popped on the forum for a gander and shocked to find my demotion to 2 stars.I have be talking jibberish for the last 2 months hoping to become a 4 star wonder (Joking what I say is VERY important and world changing LOL).

Absolutely, which is why we have foo and idle chat.. we need a bit of lighthearted banter now and again...

The problem with the star system, is that there are a few, and they are in the minority who simply need/want all those stars above their name... and post just for the sake of it.. and sometimes it can be detrimental to a thread.. those who type.. **sorry can't help, or nothing constructive to say** etc.. why bother posting if you have nothing to offer the OP...

Now at least, it will take them years to get another star.. so its not a bad thing at all.. at least the stars will hopefully mean something in the future.. Quality answers, not quantity posting...

maybe even eliminating the star system for foo and idle chat replies.. so those threads don't contribute towards the overall 'target'  (for those who are aiming for a target)
