Previous Next Up Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / bitch unable to feed pups - would you mate again?
By KaneFizz (*) [de] Date 05.09.10 16:17 GMT
Hello I don't know if anyone can remember but I had a toy breed which ran out of milk one week in...so I had to feed the pups by bottle every two hours.

Would this bitch be likely to do this all the time?
I am unsure weather to breed her again or get her spayed incase she ran out of milk again this year.

I breed toys, so, only my take on this.  I wouldn't put any of my girls through a second whelping in these circumstances.
The hurrier I go - the behinder I get!

If a bitch isn't a natural Mother, then I don't mate her again.

Ditto, and it would put a question mark on her daughters futures as a broods.

I personally wouldn't take the risk. Did you manage to keep something from her last time?  It can pass down the generations but I would rather take a risk on a daughter than the mother again.

Hi she was a very good mother in regards to materinal instincts and hardly ever left them. She always allowed them to feed of her there simply just wasn't any milk there after the first week. It dried up becasue the puppies could only get milk out of the bottom two. All pups survived.

Did you manage to keep anything from her last time?

When you say there was milk available from the bottom two did they continue to feed from her then or not?

On the positive side could this have been a case that you intervened too soon perhaps ?

I have experience of this and I would say no don't do it.

My bitch had no milk at all and we had to bottle feed. The second time I hoped her body would have worked out what do do but no, theres was no milk again. I did not breed from her again. She was a brilliant mom, the best you could ask for but bottle feeding large litters is no fun at all. We weaned early LOL!!

You amy fidn this FCI (International umbrella organisation for Pedigree dogs) policy document: http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/29-2010-annex-en.pdf
Quote: "6. Any dog should be able to mate naturally. Artificial insemination should not be used to
overcome physical inabilities of the dog. A bitch should be excluded from further breeding if she
is unable to give natural birth, due to anatomy or inherited inertia, or if she is unable to take
care of the newborn puppies, due to mentality or inherited to agalactia (no milk production)."
