My 10 month cocker pup woke early yesterday morning about 4 am and started with a loose motion then progressed to diarrhoea and was sick. She was as bright as ever. By 10am her tummy had settled down so I gave her some boiled plain rice.We went for a short walk and every thing was fine . We went on an hour and a half drive to my son's house still no problems, she used to be really car sick.
I gave her some more rice on our return . Having been alright all day I gave her some of her ordinary puppy food about 8pm . 10pm she started with diarrhoea again I was up several times in the night. Every thing seems to have calmed down so I have tried her with some rice again.
She had her kennel cough vaccine just over a week ago can this cause this sort of problem?or is it more likely to be a bug?
Any advise would be welcome, she is bouncy and alert otherwise I would have been straight to the vets.
It's always difficult to withold food from a puppy but witholding food for 24 hrs and then start feeding with rice and chicken or fish is the usual treatment. I think you have done what I would have done, except I would have offered a little chicken, no skin, with rice several times a day and increased the amount for a couple of days until her stools returned to normal, bearing in mind that the stools will be pale because of the diet, and then gradualy return to her usual food. Don't withold water, if she is bright I would not worry too much. Doubt if the jab upset her more like she has found and eaten something you would rather not know about. Bet shes better by now. If you are worried see the vet, but they will not usually treat diarrhoea unless the dog is dehidrated.

I always keep a few sachets of lectade in the veterinary room, and its ideal for times like these. However, be aware of treating the symptoms rather than the cause.....I would always want to know what was actually causing the diarrhoea
My 6mth weim had a phase of diarrhoea and being sick. The first time he had the runs I gave him Buscopan tablets, one in the morning and one at night for about 5 days, starved him for 24hrs but gave him water and that seemed to do the trick. The second time he got diarrhoea which was a few days later I decided to take him to the vets just incase but as he was fine in himself the vet said it was probably just something he ate and gave him a shot of Buscopan except he charged me £20 instead of the £3 I paid for the tablets from the chemist.
I suppose I got peace of mind from my vet and my pup turned out to be okay, I guess if your pup has diarrhoea for the first time and is still okay in herself I wouldn't worry but if it were to continue or return I would take her to the vet just for peace of mind. The Buscopan certainly seemed to help.

Thank you all for the advice we thought it had settled down with the rice and chicken but she has started to have liquid motions again each time she has some food, just chicken and rice. I will take her to the vets tomorrow just to check. She is still a picture of health .

Misty, our cocker spaniel pup has continued to have a problem with diarrhoea. She is fine all day but starts late evening with diarrhoea which continues on and off during the night. At first the vet thought Misty must have eaten something that had upset her stomach and just gave her a kaolin paste with probiotics but now that it has continued is treating her for colitis. We are still feeding her with rice or pasta and chicken or fish or egg divided into 4 smaller portions she is also taking Salazopyrin half a tablet twice a day. Misty really is enjoying the diet she had become very reluctant to eat her Pedigree puppy food before she started with this problem. Is this a typical case of colitis ? Once a dog has had an attack does that leave them prone to suffer in this way? I was unable to go to the vet for her latest visit so missed out on asking these questions .

Misty slept through the night without having to make numerous trips outside, accompanied by me, for the first time in nearly two weeks so the treatment seems to be working. The nights sleep was bliss!
She has been given 2 weeks supply of salazopyrin with instructions to treat for 1 week and to return if she hasn't improved after then.At no point has she passed any blood .

Hi Sue
If your pup does have colitis, then you might find that live natural yoghurt (or a probiotic powder) might help (but only after any antibiotics have all been used as the antibiotics will kill the "good" bacteria in the yoghurt). I have a friend whose dog also has colitis & she has found that a food called "Naturediet" suits her bitch best - this comes in vacuum -sealed packs & only contains rice, meat & vegetables. It's quite expensive food but might be worth considering if you have a dog with a delicate "tummy"

Hi Jane
Thanks for the advice I am unsure if I am giving Misty enough or too much food at the moment. What weights of rice /pasta and chicken/fish should I be giving a 10 month cocker spaniel bitch a day? She is devouring the food as if she hasn't been feed for ages in fact I think she may have put on weight rather than loosing it. The rice and chicken will be lacking in certain vital nutrients so is there a colitis friendly way of adding these?
Hubby is complaing the dog is getting better food than him! Where is his poached fish ?

Hi Sue
I don't think you need worry too much about the lack of nutrients if Misty is only on the plain chicken/rice diet for a short while, but if you feed this sort of diet long term, then you could add a good vitamin/mineral supplement such as SA37.
As to how much you should be feeding Misty, that varies so much with individual dogs that I wouldn't like to state a specific amount. The fact that she eats as if she is starving doesn't necessarily mean that she is ravenously hungry but that you are giving her food that she really likes! Most of my Cockers fall upon their food as if they haven't eaten for a week too - but then they are greedy gannets :D If you feel Misty is gaining too much weight, then just cut back on the pasta a bit.

Hi Jane
Thanks for the advice. The chicken etc and rice diet is certainly more to Misty's taste so the name of a decent supplement is very usful I rang the vets yesterday and they gave much the same advice .She supplemented the food herself by eating a snail- ugh! hardly low residue When she was first ill I queried the snail eating with the vet as to being the source of the problem but she did not think there was a problem with snail parasites in this area ( East Yorkshire).

I have always used Kaolin & Morphine mixture with 100% success every time.

Hi Louise
What dose would you have given a 10 month pup? The vet did give her Kaolin paste with probiotics but that did not have much effect. The problem was she would be fine all day so I thought she was getting better may be if she had the Kaolin and Morphine straight away it might have sorted her out.
Have you seen Purdy lately ? How is she doing?
Regards Sue
Sue
I would give 5ml to a 10 month old puppy. But give it at first sign AND STARVE FOR 24 hrs AT LEAST! Then try boiled chiken and rice in VERY small amounts for a few days. You might find it is something in her feed that is upsetting her tummy. I have a 14 week old pup who can't stomach Eukanuba or butchers tripe.
Good Luck!

p.s. re. Purdy - if you mean my little orange bitch she is doing absolutely fine

Where did you get your pup from by the way?
