Hi, my dog was mated 19/21 days ago. Is it still too early to tell if she is pregnant or should there be signs by now?.
Her nipples are slightly prominant but not much and her vulva is swollen. She is a small breed dog. Any comments would be welcome. Thanks

Many have no obvious signs till 5 or 6 weeks, you can have her scanned at 28 days onwards to confirm pregnancy but numbers of pups at this time may not be accurate as some may be absorbed as the time goes on.

At that stage I wouldn't expect to see anything whatsoever -unless she was one of those bitches that decides to hate other bitches as soon as they have been mated and therefore change their behaviour markedly, but I've only ever had one like that. Most vets will not scan until 4 ½ weeks at least and I've been to the vet with a large bitch at 5 weeks of pregnancy saying I didn't think she was pregnant -only for her to have TEN pups.

Some get a bit of morning sickness/go off their food at about 4 weeks. My toys I find the nipples enlarge on after about 5 weeks, but really that's only because they are on my lap upside down -on the big bitches I don't notice a change in the teats until 6 weeks onwards. Overall I'd say behaviour changes are more obvious than physical ones every time.

If you are not experienced, it is way too early for you to have any real chance of knowing.  And you often get mated bitches that haven't actually taken, and go on to have a phantom.  They can be pretty convincing too!

She didn't take the last time she was mated so i'm really hoping that this time she has.

Bit  too early  to see any outward  signs  but  i scanned  my  friends  bitch at  day  23  and  we  could  see pups, maybe  worth having a  scan  at  28days you  will see for  sure  if  pups  there

with my bitches i can normally  tell  from 5  weeks  they  start  to lose their  underline  and  teats  become pinker, but  some  phantoms can be  very  convincing

Is that when they start putting on weight?

not always ,some can put weight on right at the end (the last 2 weeks) every bitch is so different and carry different too ,plus if theres only small a small litter then it can take longer to see weight gain.
