I would like to know at what age does a stud dog cease

Every individual is different - and it depends on the breed life expectancy. I think most dogs' fertility will decrease at about 2/3 of its expected lifespan but some dogs keep fertile into their teens, but litter size may well reduce.

Hi, recently saw some semen tested from an 11 year old dog (large gundog breed), he had not been used at stud for several years, but the test showed excellent mobility, minimal sperm malformation, theoretically still fully fertile. The litter from that mating are due in a couple of weeks.

My Italian Greyhound was from a litter of 3 (about average for the breed) sired by a 12 year old dog, and his breeder has used her other stud dog at 13 this year, producing another healthy litter of 3!

That's very true but he is only 9Months old and he thinks that he is ready now if you know what i mean, wink wink

If he's only 9 mths why are you worried about age?
I hope you have read Jayne's (Lady Dazzle) advice for stud dog owners about responsibilities, as it is very informative.
Are you planning to show or work him?
Have you arranged for all relevant health tests?

I know that he has to be at least 18mths old but im looking for as much info as i can get as i don't want to look ignorant when the time comes and yes i have booked him in for the tests that he needs, and the answer to your next Q is that yes i will be showing him just as soon as i find out more info on where the shows are held and when.

You will find all info on shows (Champ, Open, Exemption etc in either Dog World or Our Dogs, published weekly on Fridays).
If you are going to get into showing, and he's any good, winning etc then people may approach you about using him, but do be careful who you agree to have for stud, the lines must checked for suitability, your boys breeder should be able to offer more info on this.
I'm glad you are health checking him, and prospective bitches should be health checked too.
But if I were you I really wouldn't be worried about the upper age limit for stud dogs when you have a 9 mth baby.

Thank, just found it on another thread, and had come back here to delete my post. the reason I asked was because there are a lot of the tests that one has to do before breeding and some of those can't be done untill the pup is 12 months old. Mainly I was thinking of the hips but in your breed that is, or was, not a problem and I'm not sure what tests are advised for the Sibs. Ja:)kie
