I didn't give my bitch any extra calcium until she started second stage labour. Then I gave her tablets every day until I had completely weaned the pups from her. If you give them too soon the bitch may not be able to call on her natural reserves in a crisis i.e eclampsia.

My vet, who used to breed dogs himself, told me to give calcium as soon as the last pup is born and keep giving it until weaning is complete. I have followed this advice and have had no problems with any of my bitches.

I give Calo Cal D just as whelping starts and a quick squirt after each pup as Bull Terriers are prone to pre eclampsia.
My vet will also give me injections if i need them but since i have used the calo cal d i have had no signs of eclampsia setting in.
