just wondered how Holly is today as you hadn't got back to the other threads to update? I thought you may have missed the other replies? I know I was very concerned at what you had said and noted that both Sara and Keriok expressed grave concern too. Not just at the newly qualified vets treatment and total lack of diagnosis (Holly could have died) but as Keriok pointed out, a cough and then collapse could have indicated distemper or a previously undetected heart condition All in all a very serious situation. How did you get on at the vets today? Have they said what tests she requires and why? Did you manage to sort out the insurance claim ... gawd, as if the premiums were not high enough already :rolleyes: I am sure I speak for everyone when I say we are all so relieved that Holly made it this time

Sorry for not replying earlier Leigh - Chris has been dealing with the vets and got in late so i didn't have much new info to post.

Holly is a lot better tonight and it's almost certain that although she does have KC, it's no-where near as bad as the original vet lead us to believe. Holly had gotten hold of an airfreshner that is normally stuck to the side of the 6ft bookcase in the lounge but when I'd turned it on I must have loosened it's grip and it fell off at some point. It was one of those circular ones that you can turn the outer cover round and the disk inside gives off the smell.

She'd been outside in the garden and then came in, ran upstairs and collapsed in a heap on the bed. The senior vet thinks that the allergic reaction was getting worse and when she ran upstairs it was just too much for her.

I've got to go in on Friday - when I've got someone to sit with the kids - to sort out the insurance claim forms so that I'm claiming for the right thing and to avoid any confusion. I've refused to pay the consultation fees and told them that unless the anti-biotics would have been prescribed anyway then I won't be paying for those either. Neither will they be going on the insurance bill.

She's to go back in next week for blood/urine tests to check Liver and Kidney function and if she's fit enough for a cardiac ultrasound - if she's not up to it then, she'll have to go back another day for it.

Thanks for your concern, and thanks to Delores for the thought of the kisses Holly loves kisses and in other circumstances she'd be in the car to come and collect them personally

Any news on Holly's blood/urine/cardiac ultrasound tests yet? Did you manage to sort the insurance claim out ok? How is Holly now?

Hi Leigh,

Holly is fine now Very annoyed that she can't go out for a walk so she's very skittish at the moment.

The vet came out this morning to do take some blood and managed to get a urine sample at the same time so that should come back fairly quickly. He said he'd call me if there was a problem with either of them.

Her cardiac ultrasound is scheduled for the new year, when she'll be fully recovered from the kennel cough and won't be infectious anymore.

The situation with the insurance is that everything is on hold until we get the results of the blood/urine tests. Her chest was clear this morning so the KC didn't really need antibiotics (that's what this vet said) so they won't be included in the bill. Once we know what the results of the blood tests are we'll know how to word the insurance claims.

I spoke to the Insurance company whilst the vet was here and got him to talk to them so we all know what's going on. It's anticipated that it will all be sorted out by the New Year. I'm not out of pocket at all at the moment as I've been refunded the excess ont he premium that I paid - at our vets if you take in your insurance certificate with the excess stated on it all you have to pay is the excess and they bill the rest to your insurance company.

Really pleased to hear that Holly is ok now despite unnecessary and extensive tests I commend you on your vet for making non emergency housecalls, lucky you! Did he charge you? Sorry, that's the cynic coming out in me :rolleyes: Maybe he has a guilty conscience :D

It is a very good job you're not a drama queen Fiona and taken this all so lightly!
I know I would have been totally devastated at the implications, if this was my dog
I am afraid he would have got the sharp side of my tongue too :D

Believe me Leigh - I'm not taking it lightly and I've had more than a few choice words to say to the vet.

I tend to work on the basis that if you go back to a vet/doctor/hospital that's made a horrendous mistake you get very good service as they won't want to mess up again and run the risk of unfavourable publicicty.

Holly seems fine at the moment and I doubt very much that the test results wll show problems - if they do then we'll deal with it. There's nothing I can do until then so getting worked up about it isn't going to do me or Holly any good.

I'll let you know how she gets on.

Fiona, missed this the first time through and have just read over the previous threads. I'm absolutely horrified about the way you and Holly have been treated. It doesn't matter how many cases of KC the young vet had or hadn't seen. Anaphylaxis is one of the acute emergencies that docs and vets should always have at the back of their mind. OK, you 'confused' the picture slightly by giving the piriton - and thank goodness you did! - but the very fact that it worked should have been a dead giveaway. Then to charge you and for the other vet to give out at you as if you'd fed the air-freshener to Holly - words fail me! Why on earth are they continuing with more tests now? Anyway, give poor Holly a cuddle for me.

They're just double checking that she hasn't suffered any kidney/liver damage from the chemicals in the air freshner.
