my husband is getting my kids a new puppy for christmas it comes home tonight. i am a little worried that i will not be feeding the puppy properly as i have never had one of my own. i want this to be a healthy puppy and was wondering what is the proper feeding proportions and how often it should be feed. the puppy was born september 11 2002 so it is 3 months old. i have had dogs in the past when i was a kid but my parents have always just left the food out for them to eat and i know that is not healthy.

If your husband has purchased said puppy from a reputable breeder, you should be provided with a diet sheet/instructions and food. This should tell you how much and how often the puppy should be fed. Don't forget to take your puppy to the vet as soon as possible and get them to give you a clean bill of health for the puppy. They will also be able to advise on worming and flea control. Vital if you have children.

we are getting the puppy from some friends i have heard that you feed the puppys 3 times a day. is this true. i do not want to do something wrong to upset this puppy. it has had all of its shots and been givin a clean bill of health. i just dont know how often to feed and how much.

What breed of pup is it? knowing the breed would give as a fair idea of how much and of what it should be fed Starting off i fed my Malamute 3 times a day, 1/2 cup of Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy with a tablespoon of plain unflavoured yogurt, at midday another 1/2 cup of Euk plus a few bits of carrots and such and at night i gave her a chicken wing and neck. Ideally you should feed your new pup exactly what and when your friends have fed it as not to disrupt it with a whole lot of changes. If you decide to change his/her feed do it gradualy over a period of around 2 weeks.

go to the libary and get a book about the particular breed you are getting and a book about puppies that should help you

i live in a small town in wisconsin our library has no books on dogs they bearly have books that kids can read i will see what i can find though.

try a search on the internet or ask your friends to write down what they have been feeding --how much and when

thank you i am just so scared that i may mess something up as my husband has wanted this dog for some time and how could i explain to my kids who are 3 yrs old that mommy did something wrong and made their puppy sick

Dont panick... you should be fine! as long as you dont give your new pup chocolate, pizza, bits of onions or anything else that isnt good for it it should survive Im not really sure about how much to feed your beagle pup, ive only ever had large breed dogs, however im sure everyone here with smaller breeds will be alot of help I just reccomend feeding what, how much and when your friends feed it, if you feel it needs more as it gets older then feed it a little bit more. But take it to the vet, he/she will give you great advise on feeding, when to add more, how to tell if your pup is gaining weight right, and anything else you may need to know, if you have questions and concerns ask your vet! make the best out of your appointment and dont leave till you find out everything you need to know IMO the best person to tell you what is right is your vet opposed to people on an internet forum who cant see your dog and give you a definate answer you can trust.
