Does anyone have any ideas how I can trace my ancestry (sp?)..

Ive had a looking in the usual search engine, but am a bit confused :D

As Lokis Mum says, first ask your breeders! (My son, when young, had to produce a Family tree at school - he got extra marks for writing it on a pedigree chart!!)

Seriously, the Family Records Office in London is good (if you know roughly what you're looking for) - I'll look out their address for you if you like. It costs, though, to get copies of birth certificates etc, but if you're really interested it's good fun.

I can talk with some authority on this, makes a change , to start you need to find as much info from/about relatives as you can.

Things like name date of birth,marriage death(where applicable ) Where they took place who too. If you can find these out for a few generations back you will be of to a flying start.

Next port of call is the biggest library you can get to where you will be able to use the info you have to trace further back still using their records. You could go to the library now and get a book on tracing your family tree as this will be a big help. Your library may have sheets you can fill in like pedigrees but with room for other details I mentioned.

There are also programmes you can buy for your computer to store all your research, but bother me if I can remember what the good one is called, I will find out tomorrow.

I know all this because when I worked in the library these enquiries were a large part of our local history department's work.

Hi Nat - I've got one of the packages - its called 'Ultimate Family Tree' its something I've been wanting to do for ages, so my husband bought it for me - 'cept that was about two years ago, and I was waiting for alfie to start school, so I had more time on my hands to start the research - problem is - then I found Champdogs!!!!! good luck - it is so interesting!
