We are soon to be changeing our 15 week old Boxer pup to the BARF diet but have yet to find a suitale supplier for the necks, wings, backs etc. We live in Lymington, Hampshire.

Any one got any recommendations?, even if its mail order as long as the quality is good, I do worry about being supplied with "off" parts etc.

I get most of my boney bits from a local butcher, I just went in and asked what he could supply. I also buy liver and kidney from him. If you want to get everything from one place I get my meat Here They have outlets nationwide and are very helpful ask for Bev if you phone or email.

Thanks Anne, I'll contact them, do you find your butcher supplies you with the odd "bit suspicious" parts ? or am I just being paranoid?

No all looks fine to me, mainly chicken back trimmings, frames, lamb ribs. Tesco's do chicken wings as do Asda but I haven't been able to get any recently.
I bought mine a cheap turkey and divided it up lasted days, very good value and they loved it.

Thanks for those Anne. We found a butcher locally who kindly gave us neck & backs as he was goint to get rid of them anyway! He cant supply regularly though so we'll have to keep looking.

Sometimes they look at me as if to say " does she know something we don't" when I clear their shelves.

I was good tonight I went to sainsbury at 5.30 and got a bargain. A trolley full of steak for us shicken, lamb etc for the dogs.

Just re-read your note about chicken frames and backs.
I posted a question here about feeding them to Sonny - have you caught up on it?
I have a freezer full of them but I guess if Sonny can't eat them, we can live on chicken soup for the next six months!
He's a five month old Golden retriever with a collosal appetite!

If you ask your butcher nicely he may get wings, frames and backs in specially for you - my butcher does as he is only a small village butcher who does not sell enough bits to feed my lot otherwise

Don't feed mine a Barf diet - but raw food. Have only recently (since puppy was old enough) started giving them raw chicken wings (older dog used to refuse to eat raw meat on the bone - it was only when he had competition from the pup that he started to eat it himself ). Is there any difference between wings, necks, backs etc ? Do you need to give a variety or is it simply cost ?

I like to give a variety, the wings, possibly, have a slightly higher meat ratio but the backs and frames can both have organ meat in them which is also required.

When you say you feed raw rather than that B word is this because you don't like the term (like me) or that you don't feed raw fruit, veg etc?

I feed a mixture of raw meat (AMP), chicken wings, eggs, pilchards, raw veg, rice, potatoes and a holistic mixer. This was recommended to me and suits my lifestyle As I said before, my Battersea mutt wouldn't eat solid raw meat for a long time - only the minced AMP variety. I put my pup onto this food at about 4/5 months.

None really, apart from cost. They all have a good meat/bone ratio whereas the legs for example have more meat and so are a bit fattier

I got my supplier from Yellow Pages under `Poultry
Wholesalers`I can buy trays of carcas`s or backs
(though I find with the backs the dogs gain weight because they have more fat on them) bags of wings,livers all at very reasonable prices.They are fresh,I bag and freeze them ready to use.

I have just suceeded in finding a 'proper' butcher after a few weeks of searching!!!!!! most of the butchers around my area are really just meat sellers, in taht they do not butcher anything, just sell prepackaged meat. This is cheaper for us humans but means there is no waste for me to feed doggies on!
anyway, lovely lovely butcher has just handed me a massive bag of lamb ribs, chick wings and other 'unidentifiable' stuff. (well, id need a degree in sheep/cow anatomy! and the ability to be nearer than about 10ft to it, as it makes me heave!) for absolutly nothing!
I have to call him up each week adn he will sort me out a big sack of stuff!
woooo hoooo, who says there is no such thing as a free dinner!

I too am just about to change my 3 (ESS,PLS, Smooth Collie) to the BARF way of eating but cannot find a supplier of chicken wings that are of reasonable cost, my local butcher wants to charge by the pound ie would cost about £20 a week for my 3, and I have another pup on the way, anyone know of a good supplier in the E.Sussex area near Brighton, cant find any poulty factories in the yellow pages any ideas anyone!????

Nice to see someone from East Sussex!
I live in Battle and get most of my supplies from AMP - sorry, I don't know how to do the links!
Tesco's and Asda's are both very good on chicken wings, especially if they have a sale.
AMP do huge bags of them at a very reasonable cost too.
I'm in the process of finding a poultry wholesaler so if I find on beofre you, I'll let you know.
Good luck with the diet - Sonny loves it!
