I know this is a dog site but I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.
I have four cats, they never go outside (house cats). Unfortunately after a trip to the cattery they seemed to come back with fleas. I have treated my whole house, curtains, bedding etc. My problem is that one of my cats has allergic reactions, especially to Permethrin which is in flea treatments. So while three of my cats are clear (and have remained clear of fleas - using Frontline) I can't find anything to treat my other cat. All the products that I can find are suitable only for repelling fleas not killing them. The cat has been to the vets and she received a injection program that is supposed to make the fleas sterile, thus not killing them but making sure that they won't breed. Unfortunately five months later I fear that this treatment isn't working. I am keep fleas to a minimum by using a flea comb, but I am desperate for a solution to try to permanently rid her of fleas.

Hi Jean ..trouble with cat fleas is that they can live dormant in the carpet or bedding for ages and ages ..the flea treatment that your vet has given to render the fleas infertile has probably worked ..except that new fleas could be hatching...I would go back to the vet and ask him for some flea treatment for the home again ..and respray as often as necessary...

Once fleas are breeding in the house it will be really hard to get rid of them, even if the cats are being treated. My friend had this problem, to the extent that her little girl was covered in bites every day. She tried buying products that were supposed to clear them from the house, to no avail - the only thing that worked in the end was getting the fumigators in, which did cost about £90, but that was the end of the flea problem in her house! May be worth considering.

I read about your flea problem I am new and should possibly keep quite till I know more about the site but here goes into the lions mouth. Bob Martins make flea bomb to use on the liveing area. and on ebay(am I allowed to say that) I purchased a ultra sonic flea comb in there auction sitefor pet products. I have use the flea bombs before with good results Do not know if it helps hope so

I'm a newby but I've had the same problem with my dog - she's allergic to pyrethrum and permethrin, she collapsed badly the only time I used flea powder on her when she was 4 months old(b****y neighbours cats leaving their fleas in our garden when ours live in!!!) Anyway after I gave her an emergency bath and made sure she was on the mend ( took a few hours to be really better and a few days before she was completely "normal") I took her to the vets who confirmed my suspicion of allergy, she must never come into contact with these substances again. As I have a small child I wanted something safe for the dog and also my little one so the vet gave me Frontline for her and it works very well, there are no fleas to worry about now they always die :D.
Frontline is also available for cats and although it is not as cheap as other spot on treatments it is the only one I know of that is free of pyrethrum and permethrin.

This response has taken a while to arrive but, I've only just discovered this forum and registered. I have two cats who have been "Programed" since the product first became available. (Prior to the injected version it was squeezed on to their favourite food once a month). Did your vet tell you the injections need to be repeated six-monthly? One of my lads - Gizzie - has never been particularly prone to fleas but, even now, Sam will have an occasional visitor (which my vet has told me will be rendered sterile because of the long lasting effect of Program) five or so months after his last dose. Hope this helps.

OK, that's not all too useful. Sorry, it's just my twisted sense of humour kicking in there.

We use Frontline {I think, ask MelodySK, my mum} to make the fleas sterile.. it tends to work. You just use it over and over, once every so often {it says how often on the packet} and they should, eventually, go away.

We used to have a huge problem with fleas, because we stopped using the stuff. We started about six months back now, and voila, rid of fleas
