Hi,
Are you looking for a flatcoat or a GSD? The two breeds are very different in temperament and characteristics, which is why I ask. As to GSD's apart from one poor three legged individual I don't know of any dogs or puppies available. Flatcoats on the other hand I can tell you plenty. Have you had a flatcoat before? Or know anyone with them? If not I would strongly reccomend that you speak to some breeders and ask to visit their dogs at home. Most flatcoat breeders would rather have you visit and experience flatcoats at home rather than buy one and realise this is not the dog for you.
Another way of meeting breeders in your area is by contacting the Scottish Flatcoated Retriever Club, or attending the Scottish Gundog Breeds Association championship show which is held on Sat. Nov. 10th at The Royal Highland Exhibition Hall, Ingliston, Nr Edinburgh.
Flatcoats need to be hip scored, the breed is currently averaging a total of 9.
They need to be tested for glaucoma, which is a very painful and blinding condition if not caught in time. So it would be essential to test your puppy from six months of age.
Flatcoat breeders do not like puppy dealers, and so you will be thoroughly checked out! One breeder I know for example flew to Switzerland to check out a potential home! They will ask for references they can check and will follow up any puppy you eventually buy.
You can also find out about the breed from Shirley Johnson, who lives in Newmarket but is told by breeders of every litter born in the UK Shirley is on 01638 718231
The kennel Club also maintains list of people with pups for sale. If you would like more information please email me.
