We have just adopted a whippet from out local humane society. When we found her she was from a broken home where she was abused, attacked by other dogs/animals, and starved. We have had her for almost a month and most of the wounds have healed. She is still very thin. We were advised to feed her puppy food to help her gain the weight back. Currently i am feeding her a mixture of wet(can) and dry food, which she loves. I am just afraid that she may not be getting exactly what she needs (nutrient wise). She has only gained a pound or three. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!!

I would say don't try to put the weight on too quickly. Give her lots of small meals rather than one or two big ones - five or six small meals is better, and won't overload her stomach too much - you need to guard against stomach upsets.

Good luck with her. :-)

Has she been to the vets recently? Just to double check that her weight still needs bulking out. It may be time to put her back onto regular adult food (but perhaps the 'performance' variety as this might help bulk her as well). I agree with the advice of several small meals so as not to upset her tum. Poor thing - how awful!

What is her weight. My whippet is roughly 18.5 inches at the shoulder and weighs around 12 kilos - some view her as very fine, but not underweight - this might give you a guideline about yours.

Hi,
you could try tripe its supposed to be fatty, you can buy it frozen in bags from Pets at home, my two whippets love it although one of mine will always be small (11 kilos) the other one is 15 kilos even though they are fed exactly the same.
Good luck with her, at least she has a good home now, you will soon have another!!
