My little Border Terrier is just like me and can put on weight by so much as looking at a treat! I was wondering how many treats you give your dogs each day on top of their normal meals...

If your dog is prone to putting on weight from having too many nibbles, try putting out a measure of treats and food in a jar equivalent to the daily requirement. Take all your food/ treats from the pot during the day and feed the remainder to you dog in the evening that way you can keep track of the "authorised" amount of food being taken and reduces the chance of overfeeding.

If your dog is prone to weight problems then why are you feeding it treats in the first place? If you feel you must give it treats, why not hold back a little of its food as Al suggested or give some fruit or carrot instead :-)

thanks for your help, maybe I wasn't clear enough Admin. When I said treat I meant a food reward which in my dogs case IS often carrot or baby tomatoes etc or a little bit of dry bread. I was just interested in how often people gave a food reward really.

The only time I treat my dogs is when I cut their nails which is once a week, when I am training with them (some time praise others treat), and agility class which is once a week, well maybe more now cause it's getting to be summer out and can practice in the back yard.

If his treats are veggies and other low-cal stuff, maybe you should look at howmuch he eats at meals and reduce that a little if he is gaining too much weight? If you give treats such as bonios/markies you're meant to adjust the quantity of food they have at a meal - this is easier to do if you're feeding a complete food.
I give treats for being a good girl basically, but they tend to be tiny ones, half a mini bonio, or a dog choc drop - I'm a firm believer that the thing your dog most wants from you is lots of praise and lots of petting.
