Hi all :D

I make my own chicken stock and since I freeze it in ice cube trays, then place in ziploc bags, I was wondering if these bite size cubes would be good for a teething puppy. Here's what I put in them - anything poisonous? Also would there actually be good stuff in the chicken broth after having been cooked for 3-4 hours?

4 1bs chicken carcasses
2 leeks (white parts)
6 sprigs parsley
12 peppercorns
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 onion sliced
16 cups of water
2 parsnips
3 carrots
chicken giblets
3 ribs of celery
thyme
3 cloves of garlic
1 bay leaf

Everything is chopped then simmered with lid on. Everything strained, then broth is frozen.

Any ideas as to whether this is a good idea? :-)
Thanks

I've no idea if there's anything in there that would be poisonous for a dog or even if they'd be suitable but it sounds gorgeous :-)

I don't think I'll ever need tobuy chicken stock again :-)

thanks,

Fiona

Not sure about the onion, without doing a search on previous threads to confirm, but I htink they are poisonous. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong

Does sound very nice though!! :-)

Onion like many things can be harmful - especially if they try and eat a whole one - but the essence heavily diluted should be OK - but you could leave it out to be on the safe side.

A teething puppy could find it very soothing and an adult would probably have a whale of a time chasing that around:D

It is yummy! :-) I add it instead of butter to dressing. I use it in so many things to add a bit of flavor. I'm glad it will be o.k. for my puppy (I'll leave out the onion). Oh, when will my pup ever come!!!!!

sounds nice Bluebell. Just one thing I was wondering - think leeks are onion family too so not sure about them. They smell and make my eyes water like onions do :p Does anyone know?

Should I leave the leeks out too, then? confused :-)

I would have thought that the small quantity of both leek and onion would do no harm at all, anyway. My dogs have always had left-over table scraps as part of their dinners, and I use onion in almost everything (savoury dishes only!!:D) and they've never to my knowledge suffered any ill-effects from it. Don't forget, garlic is also part of the onion family and it is recommended that dogs get a clove of garlic every day for good health and to help prevent parasites!
