Hello everone. This is my first ever post on here. I'm getting a golden retriever puppy in a couple of days time. I know that the breeder has been feeding them a raw food diet but I don't want to continue this as we don't have a freezer due to not having mains electricity. I was thinking of gradually changing to a premium complete dry food; something along the lines of Hill's, Nutro, Eukanuba, etc.. My local pet shop recommended a brand called Nutrience which they said was the best but I can't find any information on that one. What do you people recommend for my new puppy; I only want the best for him.

Why don't you speak to the breeder about what she would recommend for your pup.

The breeder recommends that I stay on the raw food diet. Obviously I shall have to do this for a few weeks but then I will need to change to something more convenient.

Have you told the breeder you intend to switch from raw? Or have you avoided it because they might not be happy? If I were you I would try and maintain the diet the pup is on now, or speak to the breeder about one of the more raw-based complete foods - but i wouldn't do it without telling the breeder. She/he should be a valuable source of advice for you in the future, and you don't really want to alienate him/her...

As an alternative why not try Nature diet ? It is the next best thing and is good if you are unable to feed a raw diet.

I agree, naturediet is the next best thing to raw. To be honest, if the pup has been reared on the best of the best (raw food) it would not be a good idea to change to processed food, (ie. tinned or dried) as these often contain a lot of rubbish.

Naturediet would be your best bet and I would speak to the breeder as well, if I found out after I had sold a pup that someone had changed the food, I would not be happy!! But if you had told me first, I could recomened alternatives and you have a valid reason why you don't want to feed raw.

I have now got the pup and mentioned to her about the difficultly in feeding the raw food diet. She is happy if I change as long as I do it gradually, she recommended Nutro to me. Luckily I have found someone who can supply me locally. I'll let you know how the pup does on it.
