i dont know if im feeding my puppy too much/too little, she's an 8 week old english cocker spaniel and im giving her 'bakers puppy complete' the breeder had been giving her this pebbley stuff which she picked at but as soon as i swapped she got an appetite, i put a handfull in her bowl 4 times a day and usually she gobbles it all down and makes me feel like shes been starving. apart from that she as no interest in food atall, even when i dropped some food on the floor by accident and training her with her food is useless because she doesn't want it so then i think that ive fed her too much for dinner and she's really full! i cant see her ribs but she doesn't look fat, is four handfuls a day too much for a small puppy?

it should tell you on the food bag how much she should need
Do you give her anything else - cereal , chicken etc ?

I've got a cocker spaniel and she'd eat all day given half a chance - they're great ones at pretending to be starving and will scavenge anything they can get to :D

There sshould be a feeding guide on the side of the packet which will help with working out the amount to give but be aware that Bakers contains a lot of colourings which sent my cocker potty - she calmed right down when I changed her onto Nutro puppy food.

The Pebbly stuff that the breeder fed her on will have been a complete food like the Bakers, but minus the shapes and colours, that are there purely to appeal to you the buyer. Some of these foods also contain a lot of sugar (will say corn syrup, caramel or Fructose) which will make it more appealing, but less healthy for the dog.

It is a bit late to tell you that it is best not to chamge, or only slowly changefoods, and that it is common for Pups to be off their food for a few deays in their new home.

Hopefully you will have had a diet sheet or guidance with the food the breeder gave.

Spaniels are often kept fat, and puppy should have a waist and ribs be felt easily, but not showing.

The breeder didn't give me a diet sheet, she gave me a tiny bag of food which lasted one day. I dont want her to sound like a bad breeder, she did look like she cared alot for the pups and asked me alot of questions. I took puppy for her injection this morning and asked the vet and he said her weights ok and they gave me a whole load of free food, (the good stuff I think called pro plan purina??) along with a puppy pack, free toys and information and an invition to a **puppy party** so she can meet some little friends! So I'll follow your advice and gradually add this pro plan and if she likes it I might keep her on it, seems safe as it came from the vets! Probably quite expensive but I'd rather put her health first. I was wondering when is it ok to start giving extra bits like bits of chicken or treats for training?
