I have noticed recently that people have posted the same *message* in more than one forum.
This has prompted me to ask how each of you *view* the message board ?
Do you *trawl* through each and ever forum?
Do you leave out those forums that do not interest you?
Do ANY of you use the
Active Topic's or New Posts links at the top of
the page?
What about the Unanswered Questions link ?
I personally, use the Active Topic's link and very little else.
I have posted this here, rather than the Feedback Forum as I'm not sure how many of you look there ?
So, how do you use the board ?
Thanx.
Leigh
I always use the New Post links and only go back to read whole topic if read an interesting reply and can't remember how the topic started. I've never used the unanswered questions link, I have occasionally used active topics, but New Posts suits me best.

Hi Leigh, I prefer the /board/ forum.pl link. I tried Active Topics and the New Posts links but don’t like them. As a very old man I find my poor brain is incapable of figuring out what's going on if I cannot see the whole topic!
As you well know, when this board was first implemented in this form, I was one of the ones who criticised the format but over the months it's been in use I now actually like it! (There, I've said it now!) At the time I said there were two many boards but now. . . . . Don’t think I’d change much!!!!! Not being into showing if I can avoid it although I check that board for anything of interest I probably read the other boards rather closer.
I'll be interested to see other view on this topic and will be watching with interest!
Best Wishes, John

Hi John.
I wasn't to impressed with the new board either, but I love it now.
Like all new things it took a bit of getting used to didn't it

I have to say first and foremost that I use the forums way too much and wonder what society is coming to when we feel we have to communicate in this way. It sometimes feels a bit sad , for me....I think it's unfortunate also that things sound differently when written on the forums and can often incite bad feeling. I would never, in a million years , intend to upset anyone else. I do think though that people should remember that it is only a vehicle for opinions - that's all - it needn't cause so much anxiety !
We should just be sharing info....
and anyway...when I wrote the stuff about ISDS collies....frankly....I was a bit drunk and confused ....so there, I rest my case !!
Anyway, I get dead confused about where I wrote what ( and begin to wonder whether, indeed, I should've written anything at all ! )...so I tend to use the new posts button...trouble is, I have problems back-tracking the thread of the discussion and to be honest, I'm getting to the stage where I might have to throw in the towel....maybe it's a case of " Love me, Love, I'm thick ", I don't know !
Anyway, the only other forum I use is the ob. forum...which i do find easier to work because you can see, at a glance, who's replied and whether you have looked at that response ( as it changes colour )........
ultimately, I think thsi si just a short term thing for me.....but I can see how you can gain some good info for specific things....mind you the order of the day should be TACT. I expect I'm as guilty as the next, but that's maybe why I think it's time to disappear ! Like I say, I hate to inflame anyone - it's not nice. But so easily done in the heat of the moment and when you have no immediate come-back - I suppose you have to think - " would I say that to my friend " ?
So.....beginning to waffle again , as Chardonnay takes hold .....
I do enjoy the conflabs though - by the way, my husband insists it's confab?....I said " No way, it's conFLAB surely? .....
not that it matters......
I should think we are more sane than we imagine....
I have to agree with you you do come over as harsh when I read your post about toys and training etc.. well... it sounded a hard way to train ( my opinion only) and when you said you had children I wondered how the dog felt at having toys put away after playtime and sitting there watching a child playing with theirs.personaly our house is covered with dogs toys and they get them out themselves when they come in,I do however take your point about distracting the dog with a toy whilst other dogs were passing I do that too,but wherever possible I allow my dogs to at least sniff (in a controlled manner) strange dogs so they are used to them... yes your right this is a discussion board and is open I hope to free speech.
glenys
I tend to mainly check the ones that interest me particularly, say behaviour, General, and visitors Questions, but like to check out the rest from time to time, I don't really use any other facilities, and like John I like ot see all the posts or i forget what's happening.
I really should look at health more as it is alwasy interesting.
I usually leave out showing, but as yet I don't show.If I do then things may change.
As regards free speech I am all for it, but then we are all human and bound to disagree from time to time. The main thing is, we should remain civil to each other even if we do disagree, as far more is learnt from a good honest debate than from petty name calling and flaming.

Ermm...excuse me - I don't have a baby !!!!! You've got the wrong person mate !
I have edited my post to say children not baby thought I had read baby sorry

I am a bit of a flitter - flit around different boards.

Rarely look at showing. General, idle chat and non-dog related are my regulars, as is behaviour. I think it was a very good idea to start the SAR for up to date information of a special event. Maybe this could be repeated soon for Crufts related questions as I'm sure there must be a lot of them. I wonder if a section for each group of dog might be useful, but then you start having so many sections it gets complicated. As a computer illiterate :o I have surprised myself that I now enjoy this board as I was also a sceptic (like John admits to).
Lorna
ps and I'm actually managing emoticons now!!
I use the main board so I can follow the threads, and then read the posts that interest me. I generally have a peek each day at pretty much each of the subjects except searching - but like the behaviour, general, health and showing the most.

Sounds about right :D But do you use just that ? Leigh

If this question is to me, yes I only use Active Topics! Once I have visited a Topic the colour of the link changes, so I can easily see which I haven't visited before (this I set up in my browsing Options, in Explorer). Also as long as I log out it shows how many of the messages are New to my last visit!
One problem I do have, it isn't readily obvious how to navigate to the rest of the Champdogs site, you often refer people to breeders info, but there is no link at top of page!

Thats why I use clickable links

The rest of the site can be navigated by clicking on the
Champdogs.co.uk logo. I agree that it is not clear though

Tried 'New Posts' but lost the thread. Personally I can see no use for that particular option on a well used board such as this.
Usually I have a quick scan down all the topics and then select Active Topics. It seems the easiest way to be alert to what is *now*.
My main threads are, obviously showing, as we are so involved, health and breeding. Foo I like but 'he who does all the work while I surf!!' (He says!!!!) doesnt. Searching and Bring and Buy neither of us visit!
I know I find the board more useable that I expected first off, I think that is me getting used to it rather than the board changing!

Agree,I didn't find
New Posts to be much use. Unless you had been following a thread very carefully, I found it hard to put it in context. You still needed to go to the main forum to view all the thread
Thats why I opt for Active Topic's. You get all the new topic's that have been posted and if any thread is added to (even an old topic) for example Micro-chipping then you get the new posting but in the complete thread.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy :D
Leigh
Just for the record, I hated the new board but now i have to say I love it, I really like having such an active board with so many dog - related questions and answers, easy to use, I felt at one time I would leave as I couldn't get on with the new layout but now I can't imagine that I felt like that at one time LOL!!!

By the way, does anyone know who the Goldie is in the top right hand corner? Must be/have been someone's special dog?

I use new posts all the time, if I can't remember a thread, or want to check then I'll open the whole of it. Active topics is too much opening & closing & scanning down for me
right click (if you use a PC) and select Open in New Window
if U use new posts The last message doesnt make sense (nor does this!!) :D

Now Longdog...if you can remember what you had for brekkie etc, then you can usually remember the gist of a thread...so it always makes sense :p
Hi,
I still visit about twice a week and look at Breeding first, then General - Health-Showing. As I am not as regular a poster as I was, I tend to not answer questions unless it hits my "spot" or is unanswered for a day or two. Once I've looked at all the catagories I look at unanswered questions, to see if I can usefully answer anyone. I dont really use any other funcions. I'd only post the same message on more than one site if it was an urgent request for help, in the hope there was a greater chance of getting a quick answer.
I read all boards 'cause it is then easier for me to see new posts.
I check all the forums that have new messages in them. I then go down the list and go into each forum. I scan the titles and if anything interests me, read it. I don't use the new topics and I read all the forums, if there are new messages in them. Does this make sense??
This layout has certainly worked for me.

I always look at the forum list, then visit the ones that have new messages. However as I don't show either, I tend not to visit there.
cos I do not visit often enough to keep up to date, new posts would leave me more confused than John claims to be.

I do find this a very user freindly site and the emoticons do go a long way to help.
Having the choice of topics is excellent.
It is really nice to be given a choice of how to use the board! Would that more boards could follow suit.
Alan.
P.S. having a post repeated in other relevent topics has helped me!!
I look down the forum list too and read all the new messages, I'm not too select at which board I look at cos I'm nosey and like a neb at em all

This board went down hill for a while but has certainly got back on the right track, any chance of having another chat room that could stay as helpful and friendly as this board has turned out to be or would that be pushing luck just a bit too far
I'd go for the chat room as well
Joan

Since being TOLD *Active Topics* was the best way to go, this is the method I use.
Once you get used to it, the layout is very straight forward.
I find it is easier and all the threads are there at a glance.
ANYway you don't argue with a *Hammy*.....

Yes... and if you find it simple Pad, it must be

Glad to see that you are doing what you are told Mr :P
Apart from *Hammy* that is !!!
Think we need another little *Chat* don't you Sunshine.

Am I the only one who uses the bulk e-mail facility then?

I have "subscribed" to all forums except Missing Dogs/Searching. I get 1 e-mail per forum per day, containing all new posts in that forum. I read all of these off-line when I have the time. I only log on if I wish to reply to a post, or add a new one, or if I've lost the thread of something interesting and need to see the whole topic again. This way, hubby can't complain too much about the phone bill, hee hee. :o
The only real problem I've found with this approach is that the "Guest" messages do not seem to be included in the bulk e-mail, so on the Visitor's Questions forum, I read lots of good advice, but I have to guess what the questions were!!! **giggles** :D :D Very entertaining!

Oh Christine, please don't be hurt. I'm sorry if I've upset you.

I really never meant to! And you do such a fantastic job for all those missing dogs too! <feeling very humble> I do read your board, on those occasions when I log on, honest I do! I scan it for posts relating to my area, in the vague hope that something might strike a chord, but nothing ever does. Please believe me! <grovel> But I don't get daily e-mails :o - perhaps I should though.
You make a very good point about checking out new adult dogs that I see. That feels like a very positive thing to do. So I will be more vigilant, I promise!
