Is it safe for a dog to eat a few grapes?

Grapes and rasins, in large amounts can cause renal failure in dogs, as I'm not sure what a safe amount would be, and that would also depend on the size and breed of dog. Personally I would avoid them as I'd prefer my dogs didn't 'get a taste' for them, as well as chocolate and onions.
