Hiya All, finally got in with my name (thanx Twills you are a sweetie ;-) ) and would like to get this off my chest.

Vets!

As most of you know, I have horses at home so I need a vet that will come out to me in an emergency. I was passed on the telephone number of one particular vet that many people use in this area.

Well, when i had a Laska, I took her there a she wasn't keeping much weight on, £353 later and 2 over night stays, they say that she is simply under weight and need to be put on a special diet (tins of veterinary ONLY available chum food at £1 per tin) which she wouldn't eat anyway. I decided to give the 'Natural Diet' a go after it being recommended to me by a friend.....with astonishing results!

Not long after, my rottie (then a 8 month old pup) had very bad weeping and red eyes. After trying drops and lotions, none seemed to work and I was put aon a waiting list for a specialist that visits the surgery once a month to see him........I am STILL waiting for that call, this was about 6 months ago! in the end, I took him to London on the train to my mum's vet of 16 years and they gave me some drops and he's now fine.

Last week, I brought my horse in from the field to fine she had a swelling round her throat. You couldn't distinguish btween her face and neck it was that bad! Well, they came out, in the evening and examined her and I was told due to her old age and so on he wouldn't rulke it the possibility of it being serious. I was very worried, but was told to wait 24 hours and see if it went down....it did the following day, and I have since found out her glands were up.....period! This little drama cost me £99.19...expensive hobbie? perhaps! But where are the vets that actually KNOW things gone? You know, the knowledgeable kind that know something when they see it and you don;'t have to give you dog/cat/horse into the hospital for numerous tests and checks that in the end then amount to nothing? Is it all out of a text book or what?

It's actually lucky I have the internet to refer to and people on here that know what they are talking about simply through experience......are good vets really hard to come by?

No Sofia, my vet is very good. Last Wednesday Monty suddenly came out in lumps all over his face and ears, a trip to the Vet and she said it was obviously an allergy, as it was confined to a his head, must have stuck it in something, well he is a GSP so no surprises there, she gave him an anti-inflammatory injection and said it should be ok, cost £22. That was at 6pm, by 9pm he was literally erupting in lumps which had now spread to his front legs, you could actually watch them appearing, so another call to the vet, out of hours, and she gave me some anti-histimine tablets, told me there was nothing more she do that evening and he would be happier at home, just ring if he got any worse, by next morning he was back to normal, cost of second visit £1.50 for the tablets, and later in the day she phoned to make sure all was ok. I have never had a problem with them diagnosing things and they certainly don't over charge, in fact I know of other people who when things have gone wrong, and not always the vet's fault, have not had a bill
at all, so the good ones are out there you just have to be lucky to find them. Ingrid

My vet and I have grown old together. He's good and that is the reason why we've grown old together!!! Don't know what my record card says but the young ones at the practice seem to know better than to try talking down to me, I get the full story, long words an all!!!!!!
There are good vets around but they take some finding. It also takes a time to build up a rapport with a vet.

Regards, John

there are good vets about: if you find one then cherish them. I travel a round trip of 100 miles for my dog vet.
I wouldn't let any other vet near them...........Luckily I have a horse-only equine practise 5 miles away for the horses.
