Now that many of us know not to give pigs ears/rawhide chews what DO we give our dogs to chew for a safe treat. I am loathe to give real bones - I always used to give big raw sawn beef leg bones until a bit wedged between the top teeth of one of my dogs - she went bonkers and it was a real hard job for the vet to get it out, he nearly had to knock her out - as he was scared he was going to dislocate her jaw. So what do YOU give for your dog to have a good chew? I do give Rasks occasionally but they are gone in a flash!! I'm talking megga jaw labs here, not westies!!

Hi W/L why don`t you try the smaller marrow bones instead of the big leg bones? My lot spend hrs with them getting the marrow out & I`ll never know how they manage it :-)

Thanks Christine - so do I ask the butcher for "marrow bones" then? Are they the lower leg bones rather than the femur?

hi,
i give our lot baked beef bones that are stuffed with marrowbone, we get these from pet superstores , even the pups love them (how on earth they manage to carry them though i have no idea as some of them are huge!) but they spent hours with them, although after a few days i do discard them. i have given these to my dogs for years, and they seem to like them, i find also that it help with the pups when they are teething :-)

I given my Cairn marrow bones and all she does is hold them, cry .. and then bury them in the garden. :-)

I buy the hard edible bones. Nylabone is the only supplier I know of in the UK. Not the plastic ones - my Cairn will not touch them. They make the edible bones out fruit, or potato, or rawhide, or carrot and lots of other flavours. You just need to make sure to take the last little bit from them so they do not swallow it whole, even if it is digestible.

Where do you get these edible Nylabones from or am I barking up the wrong tree!!!! We have a blue plastic one with nobbly bits and red plastic one tat's meant to taste of chocolate but I've never seen edible ones. I've heard they're quite safe though and as I have to leave Molly on her own for a few hours I would really like to give her something long lasting but safe i.e. NOT raw hide.

Hi WL

I get calcium bones from Countrywide and MB loves them ! She has had two that have lasted her for a few months now. She will sit and chew them for hours ! She carries them around with her all the time. They do not splinter and are very hard wearing and do not make a mess !! :-)

HI all, thanks for the tips I shall try some of them out. Spin WILL be pleased, she obviously wants something to chew as she keeps bringing logs /branches indoors, which of course I have to take away - and she loooks sooo sad " dont spoil my fun mum" with such a pleading expression it makes me feel a complete heel!

Nylabones, Galileo, Gumabones; all really long lasting even among power chewers and safe if swallowed.

Nylabones and Galileo bones are fantastic. I would stay away from the gummabones as they can chew pieces off and several dogs have ended up with blockages.

My dog loves the kongs. He is an aggressive chewer, so we get the black kongs. He really likes it when you put peanut butter, liverwurst, cheese whiz etc inside and it keeps him busy for hours. Check out the kong website at www.kong.com

My boy absoltuely loves the Kong balls too. He goes crazy for peanut butter - but watch out for the after effects WINDY!!!

Unfortunately my boy can destruct these indestructable Kong balls so that's out of the window now!!
