We are looking for a border terrier to join our family. We are not bothered about age, sex or colour and would be as happy to re-home an older dog as to take on a puppy. We have 1 child aged 6 and 1 cat. Please e-mail me on vagobythesea@aol.com if you know of any dogs/puppies available. We are happy to wait if needs be. Many thanks

Thanks Leigh.

I have just spoken to them but they do not recommend I get an adult dog afterall which is a shame as it is likely to kill our cat.

It looks like I will therefore have to look for a puppy after all.

I have made my interest known to the 3 breeders on this website that are closest to us namely, Cornwall, Wiltshire and Devon but do you know of any more or anywhere else that I may be able to find a puppy from?

Regards

Do you think there might be some BT breeders who might refute the idea that adults would kill a cat? Just a thought -

My bt's okay with my own cats, but woe betide any new one to come onto their patch...it wouldn't stand a chance!

Maisie

It's true that "potentially" any adult dog not previously exposed to other animals may do harm when they are introduced. BUT - if you got a rescue or re-home of any dog that had been brought up with cats, children, rabbits or whatever, you are unlikely to have problems.

I would not totally rule out a rescue at all - you just need to be careful to ensure you know the full background.

With a puppy of course you have the opportunity to shape the dogs manner and tolerance.

The trouble with Rescue dogs of any breed is that you will never know if you are getting the truth. Owners tend to *doctor* the truth thinking that it will make it more palatable ...... what they don't realise is that we find out in the end anyway and that they could have saved us a lot of time and *grief* if they had just been honest in the first place mad

How very true Leigh.

Many times I say to owners looking to re-home there dog please be honest and that way it will help us to find the right home for the dog.

Oh yes, totally agree - it's best that people come clean - I can see what your getting at - the BT owner perhaps knew her adults would chase/kill cats (?)...or am I getting it wrong again !? .............but yes, I used to run a rescue / re-homing service for my local area and I never pulled any punches about the ' habits ' of some rescues !

Just for your information.

I breed Border Terriers here in Norfolk, and if anyone wants to see how BT's and cats get on, come and have a look.

We took in a 6 week old kitten last year, which has latched on to one of my older bitches. She started to suckle from the bitch almost as soon she arrived and still does so at 18months old.

I have 10 Border's ages ranging from 4 months up to 12 years and not one of them would dream of hurting her in fact they defend her.

I am not saying that all Borders would be like this, nor any breed come to that, if a cat runs then it is fair game to most dogs. But I am fed up to the back teeth with give a dog a bad name mentality.

I recently helped a man local to me who had been turned down by BT Rescue because he had a cat, he now has a BT living with him his wife and the cat in perfect harmony.

Hi.
I have 3 Border Terriers and 4 cats !! All my dogs adore the cats and queue up for "head washing sessions" when one particular cat is in. When they are out however they do treat other cats as "fair game" and would give chase. Saying that I would not hesitate in introducing a kitten or adult cat into the family, nor would I hesitate in bringing a rescue dog in that may not be used to cats, careful management and introduction is all that is needed. please do not give up on a rescue it may be just a little time and patience that is required to get to the happy family stage. Keep us informed.
Dawn B.
