at what age do you drop puppies down from 3 meals a day

Think it depends on the finished size but from 5 months upward. Don't worry though they usualy 'go off' one of the meals with my breed it is usualy lunch. I then continue with two meals for the rest of their lives unless their sick and then I may give three or more until they recover. If you puppy is much younger than 5 months it may be it is finding life too exciting to stop to eat and I'm afraid you will just have to persivere. JH

My Lab is 5 months old and I've just reduced from 3 to 2 meals a day.

Thanks for your advice my older 2 are on 2 meals a day but couldnot for the life in me remember at what age one was dropped. He is only 4 months no hassle to carry on feeding him I have made it not a large as the other 2

Why are the meals cut from 3 to 2 a day? At the moment our cocker (6 months) is stuffing all 3 of his meals down as quickly as he can and would eat anything and everything else around and about given half the chance! Is the cutting down to make it more convenient for the owners or better for the dog - I assume you feed the same amount, just in 2 portions rather than 3. I really don't think I've got this feeding thing right yet!

Hi Goink, Adult dogs do eat less than pups. Its like children they feed every 3 to 4 hours as babies and huge amounts by the time they are about 10 but it is cut down to 2 or 3 meals a day when adult. Most people feed four meals to start with, a small puppy tummies can not manage too much at a time, as the stomach grows the meals get larger and the number are reduced. Boring ain't it. Having said that I think you have a greedy breed and you may have to control the amount of food you give, or you or rather your dog could get over weight, as long as the amount is right you should feel free to feed as it suits you, there are no rules, we all make them up as we go along and find that what suits one dog will not suit another.
