I was looking after my grandaughter (Shelley 6Yrs)last week she had terrible tonsilitis, anyway on Monday she felt better and begged to go back to school as she is going to be an angel in the school play, I gave her a note and some satchets of Calpol to be taken at lunchtime. When she came home she gave me a letter from the head teacher saying they couldnt let her have the calpol and that only when a letter was given by the doctor and the Insurance disclaimer signed could they give any child any medication. (if they had rung me I would have gone and given her the calpol)I remember being given junior disprin at school when unwell and there being a sick bay where you could lie down, they dont have this now do they? I think our politically correct world has gone mad!

realised too that on sunday at the dog show someone was suffering from a bad migraine and as a fellow sufferer I gave her some of my medication, realise now I could have been sued if she had had a reaction to the tablets

Hi Mattie
It's not the "politically correct" world gone mad - it's the immediate route to sue and claim astranomic compenstaion when something goes wrong. Teachers and many other professionals are constantly finding themselves victims of litigation when accidents etc happen as we are becoming a nation of people always looking to blame someone else. All those adverts that are constantly on TV don't help. Obvious neglegence should be challenged, but this is the real world and accidents do happen only we don;t accept that any more.
It is such a shame when a child has to suffer simply because the medication they need is available over the counter rather than needing a doctors prescription.
Hope she's feeling better now and looking forward to wearing her wings

- wish we could do Christmassy smileys

Pam, I appreciate what you're saying, but if you want to see high awards and frivilous suits, you need to go to the US. Remember the million dollar hot cup of McDonald's coffee which resulted in all kinds of notices having to appear all over about coffee being hot? I look at the awards that the television attorneys are advertising as BIG awards over here and shake my head. The average slip and fall in the US, without permanent injury, is easily awarded $10-15,000. When one starts to discuss occupational injuries, like burns, limb injuries, etc., the awards can easily be in the $100,000+ range. I found the UK system to be much less friendly to the plaintiff on personal injury suits and that is not all bad.

The world has gone mad Mattie
My daughters school recently had a serious outbreak of headlice ..stop scratching!..lol
We were informed that childrens heads are no longer routinely examined by the *Nit Nurse* because it could be misconstrued as assault!!!
Thinking back to that metal comb and that womans boney fingers ....it was!You are right tho', everyone is running scared of law suits.
I wonder if good old common sense will ever be fashoinable again ?

Well i work as a carer for a severly disabled lady who is not capable of medicating herself but in law as i understand it i am not allowed to give her medication i have to say that i promt medication, apparantly this safeguards you but i dont see the difference really as i litteraly put the tablets in her mouth as she has not the use of her arms i often wonder where i would stand on this espesialy as she is often taking newly licenced medication, if she was to have a reaction to the meds or worse died who would be responsible the prescriber or the giver also who administers the medipens that children have at school for nut allergies? My daughter has Downs and attends a special school where all the children are sent home with an authorisation form ranging from paracetamol for headaches/pains to allowing emergency treatment to be started if necessary when out on a school trip. This is sent home for signing annually. Maybe they should be doing the same in other schools.
