can someone please tell me what the padlock is at the beginning of the heading, it's driving me crazy not knowing.

It means that admin have locket the thread, sometimes because it is getting heated, sometime because it is getting too long. When it is sorted by admin it is put back in most cases without the padlock. Those posts about missing dogs are locked too as there is no need for a thread to develop.
