Does anyone out there have trouble using front line spot on dog? My two seem to be very lethergic for at least 24 hours after having it applied and the TH hasn't eaten since (although she is a picky eater).

Anyone else had probs with it? And what else could I use instead? Need to provide monthly tick protection as well as flea control.

Hi 9th,
I use Frontline spray on my dogs and haven't had any problems, but I do use the Spot On treatment for the Cat and he does go off his food for 24 hours. I have stopped using it monthly and now only use it in the "risk" period, so that he gets a break from it for part of the year.
Trouble is I haven't found another product that is as reliable as Frontline.

The only other thing that I use (as well as FL) are garlic tablets.

Thanks. I don't use it all year round, just at the times when the grass is long and there is a high tick risk - mostly deer ticks round here. Thought about garlic tablets, but the prospect of the grumpy collie with garlicky dog breath was just too much!

I guess I'll have to persevere, it would need about 90 sprays to do the towel hound with the FL spray!

Which reminds me. Still no luck on the venison front but Mad Adam got two last week, so I'll keep sending Al out at strange times of the day and night in the hopes of getting a little something to fill your freezer!

I never used chemical sprays on my dogs, because many of them used to contain dreadful things like organophosphates, some are - oh, WHAT is that word whch means it gets inthe system -systemic I think!!! It ain't natural!!

What I did use was Sherley's Herbal powder (like talc) no problem to put on, and also my onw mix of essential oils swished in water and stroked on with a damp cloth (avoinding sensitive areas.)

Rarely if ever a sign of fleas, and my dog swent everywhere; the odd tick or two and I removed this with margarine. I know there is a problem with lyme disease but I personally suspect many a dog's immune system is messed up with all the chemical stuff.

However it's much more difficult if you have a cat.

I always do use Acclaim for the house, just twice a year, tackles it from the heart so to speak.

BEst wishes

I use Dyna-mite - a herbal remedy. Originally got it for my chickens and lovebirds but discovered you can use it on dogs (and humans) as well.

My Mum has been known to use it on plants in the hope of discouraging greenfly!

Hi,
i have just had this discussion on sensibledogbreeders@yahoogroups.com!
My dog is really poorly for two to three days after using the spot on treatment, so I have given up using it. I tried it twice in total, the first time i thought he'd just picked something up, (being a flatcoat it would not be unsurprising!) But twice in a row was just too much coincidence.

hi Polly, nice you've joined here.
At dog club this evening we were talking about Frontline spot-on and one of my friends who is a groomer said that they had had quite a lot of dogs in who all had a small bald patch just at the spot that Frontline is placed. Too many for coincidence she felt. I use the frontline spray and have never had any problems with it, I'm not so happy with the idea of the spot on

What's wrong with a good ol' fashioned flea collar. Our dogs and cats wear them and we have never had any flea problems. The odd one or two when we get a new puppy but that's it.

Hi Freeway

I used to use flea colars a lot, on our Lab/whippet cross, butshe was always very unhapy when the collar was put on , for about a 24 hour period. I then read a really briliant article in Dogs today which outlined which chemical was in which flea product, it was very enlightening, and I seem to remember that a lot of organophosphates were in theflea collars.

This was in the 80's so of course things could have changed...

Best wishes

Hi I use Stronghold spot on and have had no problems with it, though I think its just the odd individual that may react to spot on treatment ( like some do to vaccs) and its bad luck if its yours. I have used Dyna-mite too, it does seem to work.
