My cat is pregnant. She is a tortie & white semi-long hair and has been having a lovely time with a long haired tabby & white tom! Anyone know what she is likely to produce? Kittens, of course..............

Torties and tortie/whites can produce an assortement of colours, but the most likely will be-
red, red/white, tortie-tabby, tortie, tortie/white, black, black/white.
I hope you have got nice homes lined up for the kittens, if she is not a pedigree cat, its really not a good idea to breed from her, also, have you tested her for FIV/FLV which she might have caught from the tom, if she has, then she will pass it on to her kittens. Sorry, but this is only one reason I am against people just letting their cat breed from the neighbourhood tom.
But good luck with the birth anyway.

When i worked at my local animal shelter, I often wondered how many Toms could contribute to a pregnancy. is there a limit. Obviously i know
a cat can only carry so many kittens but could they all be different.

Yes we have homes lined up for 2 and we are going to keep one - and then we are going to have her spayed. She had all her jabs in October, so she should be o.k.

I am glad you are having her spayed, very responsible, but I have to tell you there is no vaccination for FIV (feline AIDS) so it might be worth considering having her tested for that.
You have to think about the health of the mum and the kittens, what would you do if she had caught FIV and would then pass it to her kittens?

A smirnoff out on the tiles cat:D

What does that mean?!!!!!

Well, what I mean is - if your cat tested positive for FIV, and the kittens would then be born with it, would you be prepared to have the kittens put to sleep, or would you let them live, knowing that they would not have a long healthy life, that they would be at great risk of catching infections like pneumonia because of their low immune systems, and that they would have to be completley kept away from other cats because of the risk of infecting them?

That message was for Mari! I've sent you an email, Bear.

Ohm. Ohm.

Sharon, you will undoubtedly have a beautiful mix of colourful long and short haired kittens.

That'll be 10 quid please! :D

Did you know you can't get male tortoiseshell and white cats as that colour is carried on the female chromosomes?
By Sharonw Date 18.01.02 10:19 GMT
You can actually get male torties/ torties & white - I've been reading up on this since I posted! However, it is very rare and they would be sterile. According to what I have read, 2 long haired cats can only produce long haired kittens and as white is a dominant colour, the kittens should end up looking rather like Turkish Vans - that is, white all over, with colour only on the head and tail.We shall see.... Fascinating stuff, genetics. I will be taking her to be spayed just as soon as the kittens are weaned, by the way. We will be keeping at least one kitten, and I have a good home lined up for 2.
If you are wondering why I posted on Champdogs, it's because I couldn't find anywhere else - just lists of pedigree cat breeders and cat rescue sites.

You are absolutely right about male tories Sharon! They are rare and they are sterile!

Don't worry about cat posts. They have just as much right to be here as horse ones, I mean dog ones!
