Hi, re nose pigment. If the pigment on the nose does not fill in completely does it count against pups when showing please,

regards Lorraine

what breed is it and what colour is it, as some colours in certain breed wont be expected to carry dark pigment, depends on what you have?

Hi Guest

As the others said it depends on the Breed :-)

In a Cocker Spaniel a light nose is a fault and will all most certainly be marked down in the Showring :-(

Although saying that if the Cocker is Chocolate Roan or Chocolate and White a light coloured nose is acceptable :D

I Think Lorraine's breed is Akita'

Like Dizzy says it depends on which breed you have , if it's a bull type breed it can count against you .
It's called a butterfly nose!
Silly name i know but there you are.

Hi in my breed westies, they should have a black nose, but sometimes get a slight browny pink colour in winter, to help get the nose back to black put some kelp (seaweed powder) into the food this is good for pigmentation, i.e. black pads, noses etc.

we sometimes get a slight lighter stripe in sharpei noses, its called brick nose in our breed, its common ,and the top sharpei had one, as long as its not a huge amount,

Hi folks, sorry have had dreaded lurgy thing and just returned to that land of living. second chance annie is an Akita, she is solid white and nose is filling in slowly, there are a couple of speckles in pink part that are growing larger all the time, still quite a bit of pink there though. She is now 15 week old so she has a little time yet but curious as to how long it can take up to. Failing that can I use boot polish ?????

thanks Lorraine

white akitas do have liver coloured pigment often also eye rims, whst colour are they my freind has an akita thats whita and about the same age as yours ,could they be related? yes its got a pinkish ,liver coloured nose and eye rims too, did you buy yours from a show kennel

Linda you are correct
"Nose large and black, bridge straight. lips tight and Black. In white dogs flesh colour pigmentation is permissible on nose and lips."
it may take longer to go all black but as long as it is one colour or the other it should be ok.

May not be relevant but using plastic food and drinking bowls can affect nose pigment

A bit off the track but one of my dogs has just hat his back shaved for an op. when he first came home the skin was pale pink but now 3 weeks later the skin has gone black. Mentioned it in passing to my vet and he said it was the temperature and when the hair had grown back it would go back to pink. May have nothing to do with noses but I thought it was interesting. JH

Also off track, but when the first of my black and tans had to have an op I was surprised to find that the skin on the leg was also in two colours (pink where the tan came from and black from under the tan). I'm used to it now but it was a great shock. I believe dogs like Dalmatians have black spots on the skin as well as the coat.

My Parsons, although predominantly white, have black pigmentation on their skin not associated with coloured hair in the coats.

Thanks Dizzy,

I am going to show annie as soon as she is able but this will be my first attempt, I bred her under the guidance of the breeder who bred my bitch and the stud dog so am only familiar with some showing names, hence my ignorance ! hopefully to be rectified in the near future if her nose fills in (fingers crossed )

cheers Lorraine
