I'm almost in mourning - a family member who has given years of devoted service is about to give up. It's my washer - it's lost the will to spin! Has anyone got any recommendations for a new one? Also I'm quite interested in a washer/dryer - anyone got one, and what are they like??
My current one is almost 17, has only had odd parts replaced, like hose or the door seal and cost very little to repair as my husband is very good with things like that. It's such a wrench to let it go!
I know this isn't dogs, but.........

Well I can't tell you about any current models but I have had my Hoover Logic washer/dryer for probably over 10 years without any problems. The thing about washer/dryers is they are not as efficient on the dryer side of things as a seperate dryer so you have to balance loss of dryer performance against space saving for someone like me who only uses the tumble a little the balance works out great but if you do a lot of tumbling it probably wouldn't.

I had a washer dryer once - it was OK but I much prefer the seperate items as the dryer door wouldn't open straightaway when it finished - it had the washer time delay thing on and so the washing was creased. A seperate one lets you open the door any time and thus reduce the creasing.

Another problem with the combined item is more things to go wrong - but if you only have space for the one appliance then I would say it's better than no tumble dryer. I couldn't live without one!! well OK then, yes I could but I'd rather not :D

The washer you are taking to Rainbow Bridge has had a wonderful life and will leave you with fond memories. I only hope your replacement will do the same - lol

There is nothing to beat a separate washer and drier. I havent room for both now so gave up on the combined one as it creases all the washing and wouldnt give the last 5 minutes of the cycle cool so it was all creased anyway so no good as I wanted it to save on the ironing!! If you have room have both or save the money and have a weekend away on the difference!!! LOl Gina PS When husband is ironing his shirts (which I refuse to do I try to hand him something of mine to iron!!)

Have to agree about the lack of performance ;-) I had a washer/dryer and regretted buying it from day one. The dryer took twice as long as a seperate dryer even if it only contained shirts. My other problem was, if you were trying to do a few loads then you coldn't start the next wash until the dryer had finished. I now have 2 seperate and the number of times both are going at the same time makes me wonder how I ever coped with a combined one. Mines a hotpoint but every appliance we have is hotpoint as we also have the hotpoint home cover which is a damn site cheper than the shops extended warranties.

I've got 4 (big) kids and my machines are both going continously today as we have just come back off hols. If I'd got a combined m/c it would take me forever. Get 2 if you've got room. You can get stacking ones.

I have a Zanussi Washer Dryer, which I had to have because at the time I had a flat with one space and it is a condenser one, so there was no need for a vent in the wall.

It was pretty good, although I'd echo the fact that you sacrifice performance and you can only do one load at a time.

Someone has since given me a tumble dryer and I'd never go back to just a washer/dryer again.

The good thing about the tumble dryer is that it has a big filter to catch all those clumber spaniel hairs. cool

HI, after seeing all my friends washing machines of other makes regularly breaking down, I would always recommend a Zanussi. I am on my 3rd one now and the first 2 lastest over 10 years each , with no probs at all and only ever had the engineer out when they were in their final death throws. My lastest one is 4 years old and still working like new. It has a really big fluff filter, which is ultra easy to get at, which is essential when you are washing vet beds daily!! They have always been used at least once and often twice a day. I have never bothered taking out the extended warranty, since the first one, as it wasn't needed!

Thanks for all your replies. I have started looking at replacements. Why is it that the big electrical stores never ever seem to carry the same models so you can compare prices?? Anyway, to make matters worse, my oven has decided to come out in sympathy with the washer, and the grill part of it packed up the other day, just as I was doing cheese on toast. It's just not the same microwaved....................

you can guarantee that when one household appliance goes wrong there will usually be another as well usually comes in threes,I have had three new irons in the last year yet my old one had been going strong for ever but I decided to upgrade it big mistake! I dont think things are made to last thses days, but My dyson thats a different story absoloutly brill and the service from Dyson itself is great they came out to fix mine and it was practically new when the man went, new lead new front everything,Ive had it about five years now and its still going strong...touch wood

Is that a hoover Mattie? Dyson hoovers are the absolute dogs... (sorry to be so crude - just thought that phrase was quite apt here:) ). I am waiting to come into money - lottery, whatever, so that I can buy the washing machine to match (retailing at over £1000)...do you know they can wash a king size duvet, so no probs when washing a large breed's vet bed then!!!!

My Dyson's okay until I have to use the hose attachment - doesn't seem to want to hold on to the extension without help, and the end-bit always falls off at the far side under my bed! Is it just me?confused

I know many rave about the Dyson, but for me it's a pain in the proverbial. What gets me with it is how the blowey outey vent is at the front so I end up chasing the b****y dog hair around the house unless I'm thinking ahead and go backwards!!! I seem to have an ever-increasing giant hairball that roams around the house with the help of the Dyson wind, just like the tumbleweed you see in the old western movies

Must admit - I don't like their washing machines - I think they look gawdy and far too plasticy.

I bought a new Dyson, after my old one (also a Dyson) broke, Only had the new one about a month and the hose broke. If your Dyson is less than 2 years old they will send you new parts. A week later I recieved a new hose in the post.
