What is Megaesophagus?.

Megaosophagus is a problem with the throat, if a pup has it, he will be unable to keep his food down, from about 3 weeks when he is starting to wean, will be vomiting up, and sometimes the throat can be seen pulsing. It is a hereditary defect, can only be determined by x ray, even a dog that does not have it can carry it in his genes unfortunatley.
A megaosophagus can be mild enough for the pup to survive and to live with it, but sometimes it can be serious and can kill a pup. Obviously a pup with suspected mega should be x rayed to determine the severity and should not be bred from. It is present in some white lines, but it is not a common condition.

just a quick note bear explained what it was also if you have a dog that does have this condition always make sure when feeding it that the food is well soaked and always fed off the floor, we had a litter born and three of them had this condition we hadnt seen it before it was only noticed when the pups continually made gagging noises, two of them went on to be police dogs the other was bought by a friend of mine and doing very well.

Wow, three pups in a litter is quite a lot, the condition is usually quite rare, do you know what lines these dogs are from? I am glad that they are managing ok with it, but I hope these dogs will never be bred from, because some puppies can get it so seriously that they have to be put to sleep.

They were from working police dog lines, and the condition hasnt been seen since. They wont be bred from because of the condition that they have, nothing is bred from that has an hereditory problem in there line.

How are you? I am fine. I too have lost three pups from a litter of 11 to megaesophagus. I was wondering if there is any research through DNA testing to find out what blood line this terrible gene is in. I have purebreed german shepards. My vet couldn't believe we had three cases in one litter. Thanks for your help.
