Where would I go to find out information on gundog training work? I have seen posts about dummy work, picking up etc. I am currently researching my local area to find a good obedience club (not as easy as it sounds), but my interest is peeked by gundog work and water work (is this different?) but this is prooving a little more tricky......

Also before I make a complete burk of myself can you join in with the training and training activities without actually having to go on a shoot? And if you didn't want to 'work' on an actual shoot would people be putout by this, and the dog frustrated because he never got to do the real thing (Iknow he wouldn't know) but would he be thinking well what's all this leading too?

Thanks for your help

Where are you living, Anita?

There are excellent clubs all over the country, and gundog training gets into full swing about now. I'm sure you would be made very welcome.

There are many people who make a hobby out of working tests (on dummies) by themselves, although, of course it is based on field work. Your dog will surely enjoy himself, and unless he's very 'gamey', he won't worry about what he's missing on the real thing. You will, of course, hear references to field work (on birds and rabbits) during training - I'm sure he won't understand the references, although you will, of course!!! :-)

I am in North Notts. I haven't got the dog yet, and I don't want to tempt fate and say anymore, but I doubt he will be very gamey. I am just looking into the different types of activities we could get into, and he might enjoy and you don't know until you ask do you?:-)

Thanks for your help

Not sure about clubs in N. Notts - will do some homework. Maybe John knows. What breed are you thinking to get?

We are hoping, in the future, to have the privilege of a SWD joining our family, although it might not be for over a year:D (And yes I know this isn't the breed I was originally searching for) So in the meantime I am looking into the variety of avenues that can be entered into in the dog world. We are interested in doing things at Junior level with the children, and I myself am interested in obdience. So I thought I would look at gundog work as well.

It just so happens that I have the Gundog supplement from last week's Shooting Times with me and it lists gundog clubs at the back.

If you e-mail me your address, I'll stick a photocopy in the post.

How about East Midlands Gundog Club Mr R Gent 0116 259 2937

He would be able to advise you about what their club does, how to get involved etc.
