If you use a mild dog shampoo, then as often as you like! Weekly if you feel its appropriate.......just make sure you are using a really mild shampoo, not a medicated/flea etc one.

I only normally only bath the dogs 3-4 times a year, unless they find something really stinky to roll in but Westies are prone to more skin problems than many other breeds. But I certainly wouldn't do it weekly as a matter of course. I would have thought that weekly bathing would not be desirable as it constantly robs the skin of natural oils and oil production would be steeply stepped up i would imagine. I always bath with just water first, no shampoo, to see if that will get them clean enough, it often does and I just have to use a little puppy shampoo on the really dirty bits. Johnsons Dry Foam shampoo is excellent for small bits of grub. No offence intended sam JMO. :-)

The Flower gets bathed most weeks between October and February, chucked in the stream after the shoot finishes! :D

I hardly ever bathe cleo as she is so short haired, but sometimes they just force you into it don't they (ie, when she gleefully rolled around on a dead and decaying rat - nice doggy!) ? When i do wash her though, i then towel dry her, rub baby oil between my hands and run my hands all over her coat - she then goes and hogs the fire, but what can i say! Leaves them soft, shiny, and replaces some of the oils they have lost through the bathing

Mine like a bath about every five weeks. Seriously, they hate water, but if it's been awhile & I ask "Do you want a bath?," They get excited, race up to the tub, and wait for me to put them in. After they're out, the next hour full of racing around like ijiots.

While I was laid up and couldn't get around, my "girls" were really starting to look run down. For some strange reason, my husband could/would not take a half hour and bathe them. He'd do everything else. Just not bathe them. They were very depressed... honestly, I'm not kidding. About a month ago, I managed to be able to give them one. So life is happy again in the wonderful world of dogdom. I have two wacked out dogs, that's for sure.

Hi again. I have already written this in a separate post, but it seems appropriate to put here. I gave my Cav King Charles a bath on Friday but by the same time the next day he was smelly again. Not just a normal doggy smell but this awful smell of stale urine. I think when he urinates he get's it all on the fur on his belly and it dries there and causes a stink. Should he be washing this off himself or is there some way I can clean him without giving him a bath? I've heard too many baths can be damaging or irritating to the skin & fur of a dog. Can anybody advise me please?

Hi again,

Have you tried trimming his "private region" with small scissors so that the hair isn't in the way? I have to do this on a regular basis with my 'girls.' I've always had to trim my dogs in their anal & genital regions regardless of breed & their regular coat length (Beagle all the way to Yorkie). They get used to it quickly. I've yet to do any major damage :D

Oh, with my Yorkie, I'd trim her belly area, but leave the sides long like a curtain. Easier to clean, but no one knew :D

Um, the idea of his self cleaning this area and then licking your hand a little later on, is a little off-putting :-( :P I understand the concept of saliva & the 20 minute changeover, but still.... ick.

Hope this helps.
