Is there anyone on this board that can give me some advice on Pekinese?
I fell in love with the breed after seeing that gorgeous little furball on Crufts, and would like to get a pup, not right now, but maybe in a year or two, but would a Peke be ok with my big, but gentle German Shepherds?
Also, what are their personalities like, are they very yappy and snappy, or as they as sweet as they look? Do they have breathing problems? Do they get on ok with cats? What price are they normally, and what colours do they come in??
I intend obviously do buy a few books and read up as much as poss, but it would be good if anyone on this board with first hand experience of the breed could advise me.

Hi bear I had peke's for a few years .I truly loved them . they are an aloof dog and dont really like other dogs but if left alone they will leave alone. They are not too fond of other people either , well ours did not like strangers. The coat is murderous to keep . they need constant washing. and full time grooming . they are prone to all the things that squashy face dogs get. The eyes are very delicate and some accidents can cause them to pop out , but if you get a healthy one they can last a long many years . They are very smart and intelligent dogs and sort of speak to you truly. My two peke's one black male and one blonde female died within a year of each other , one had cancer of the eye and the other had cancer of the stomach, the black guy was eight yrs old , and the girl was eleven yrs old . There was unbelievable grief when they died .One of my daughters actually got very sick with the loss . so that will tell you how close they can get to your heart. your choice from here

Hi Bear,
Pekes are wonderful, I started off with 2, I now have 12..they range in price from £250 - £700 depending on the breed standard & location you buy from. My pekes all have their own personality and are true friends, I have 3 childeren aged between 1year and 13years, a chow chow, a cat and a guinie pig and my pekes get on with all of them, one actually grooms the cat. From the last litter, my sister had one and it made a lovely playmate for her rabbit.
Grooming can be fun..they all line up and wait their turn, 2 don't like having their nails clipped. We had a german shepherd a few years ago before she passed away and they also got on fine.
Depending on how well they have been socialised as pups and their breeding line, will depend upon their temprement i.e snappy. I have one which is a right little yapper but the others are quiet. They come in all sorts of colours. I have white, red, brindle, and some white/black/red parti-colours, they look wonderful all bundled together when they sleep - we can't tel who is who..they are great companions and brilliant pets.

12 Pekes - Oh my Gawd!!
The grooming you must have to do...hee hee, I bet you're house is really hairy!
Do they all get on? Did you breed some of them? What is your favourite colour, and how do you mean when you say that they vary on price depending on breed standard, I thought they were pretty much all the same? Can you post pictures on this board, anyone know, as I would love to see your doggies, or should I say furballs!! Hee hee, do you keep them all in full coat?

Actually I also own Persian cats and Angora rabbits!! Well you know what they say about the wicked...heh heh!!
Grooming ??? yes well, it takes myself and my partner (childeren sometimes) many hours, we do keep them in full coat, the house isn't too bad actually - the chow chow sheds more fur than the pekes (seriously)
I do breed them (3) my favourite is the part colour (red/white&black). What I mean by price differnce is i have had may people from Darby buy from me - they tel me that pekes around there go for £500 - £700 each. Of course the price increases if the breeder feels that they are champion quality (so I've been told)
I would post some piccies for you if i knew how ?????
It's great to see them all come running from the back garden, it's a sea of fur - I love them all to bits. My favourite one was Cleo, the was pure white with one black patch over her eye and a red ring around her tail, she was so cute, she was a minature and never really grew up, she was absolutely scatty and slept with me in our room - she so very sadly passed away 3 weeks ago at 10 months old of a heart attack - I'm still heart broken. I miss her so much

Hi donna, so sorry to hear your sad news, you must miss her a great deal. People always say " well youve got the others" but they are all individuals in their own right. Hope you start to feel a little less unhappy soon.
Thankyou Phillipa - it does get easier but I still miss her, I had her cremated as it makes me feel as though I haven't 'got rid' of her and that is comforting - I can't bear to bury anything.

Hi Bear
I love them I couldn't live without them I have two at the moment. I breed and show Bearded Collies and they get on very well together.
I have owned Pekes for more than thirty five years they have been around babies cats other dogs you name it they have done it films TV stage.
They are high maintenance dogs not much bathing (makes the coats soft) but a lot of grooming the folds on the nose need cleaning every day and care must be taken with the eyes a bang on the side of the head could result in an eye popping out (Yuk) they snore like mad and they cost a lot to buy but they are worth it they are my little treasures and I want to buy two more I like them in fours my pekes have all lived to a great age I have black girls but I have a soft spot for the parti colours as my first was a red and white parti.
They come in all colours any colour except liver is OK.
